Beep! Beep! Beep!

The alarm on Lance's phone went off at 4am. With a sleepy groan he reached out to slap his phone a couple times to get the beeping to stop. It took a few tries but he eventually got it. Lance reached behind him expecting you to be there, but you weren't.

Lance forgot that he stayed in his parent's place for the night since he knew he would help with the fish market today. He figured you were still asleep in your apartment farther in the city.

A couple shuffled steps into the bathroom and a few slashes of cold water to the face, Lance was already awake.

He didn't bother turning on the lights, he knew the layout of his parent's small apartment anyway. Taking an energy over coffee as his daily caffeine intake, he waited for his father, a proud and hard-headed man, to be ready so they could go prepare for the day.

This was the norm, Lance would drive him and his father in their truck that's existed as long as he could remember. They'd drive to the outskirts of the city and to the marina where the small fishing boat was waiting for them.

By the time that was done pulling in nets and cages, the sun had come over the horizon, the dark blue of the early morning sky faded into hues of orange and yellow. Then at that time, Lance's father would have a cigarette while Lance drove the boat back to the marina.

"...Dad, you really need to quit, it's bad for your health."

"Bah, let this old man do what he wants." A wisp of smoke exited his father's mouth.

Lance shook his head and drove them back in silence while the sea breeze carried the scent of cigarette behind them. Only the motor of the boat broke the silence followed by the soft splashes of the wakes trailing the vessel.

Back on shore, Lance hulled the day's catch into the truck, once again driving himself and his father back into the city in time to set up shop. All before the clock hit 7am when the street market opened.

As the day went on, Lance went about his duties. Cutting fish, setting up the display; his aging parents helped with the smaller details while he did the brunt of the work.

Yet, his usual routine was disturbed by some events that happened more than usual. Some gang of delinquents tried to steal a create of clams. A smoker when there was obviously a 'no smoking' sign. A difficult customer who went to harass a woman selling fruit across the street. All in one day.

By the time, the day was done, Lance just wanted to see you again, tired of seeing indecency in humans. Lance said goodbye to his parents and promised to be back another day to help. He took his own car and headed towards his and your apartment.

Unlocking the door, he could smell food in the air, he knew every time he helped with the fish market that he wouldn't be home to made dinner.

Finding you in the kitchen, Lance treaded over and hugged from behind, putting his face in the crook of your neck. "Hey," he said softly, taking a silent inhale of your scent.

"I missed you today," he whined he seemed more down than usual, I don't wanna think about today...

The gesture would be sweet if Lance hadn't come over still smelling like saltwater and fish. It masked his sage scented pheromones.
