William Lee strolled into Ship Ahoy, the yellow and white motif somewhat blinding under the dim bar lights. He approached the bartender and ordered a shot of whiskey. Downing it in one gulp, he felt the familiar burn slide down his throat, steeling his nerves.

His gaze drifted around the bar, taking in the usual suspects - sailors on leave, businessmen looking to blow off steam, and the odd local desperate for a taste of the exotic. That's when he saw you, sitting in the far corner like a fish out of water. A nod and a small smile, then you turned away, focused on your beer.

Emboldened by the liquor, William stood up, his barstool screeching against the hardwood floor. He did a lame curtsy in front of you, shooting his shot like the fearless soul he was. Unfortunately, his confidence wouldn't be reciprocated. You simply looked the other way, leaving him feeling embarrassed and rejected.

Perched back on his barstool, William could feel the weight of the bar's stares on him. That's when an annoying voice piped up beside him, "Oh my" It was John, the resident mean queen, his lips curled in a smirk.

William just shook his head and signaled to the bartender, "Another whiskey, please." As the glass was slid in front of him, he downed it, relishing the burn. Tonight was going to be a long night. But then again, every night was a long night for Lee. Always chasing something, always hoping to fill the aching void inside him. But he didn't have to tell you that. He just needed to focus on the here and now. And right now, you were the shiny object he wanted to catch.
