The blaring voice of Demetrius Castile, my father, from the TV shattered the quiet of the opulent mansion. His smiling face, plastered across the screen, was an unwelcome intrusion. With a frustrated grunt, I flung the remote across the room, the screen plunging into black. This place was suffocating me.

My car keys jingled in my hand, a restless rhythm. I needed out. But just as I reached the massive front doors, the doorbell chimed, pulling me up short. On the video monitor, a face I never expected to see materialized: Kenna Gold.

My vision must be failing. Kenna Gold, on my doorstep? Impossible. I rubbed my eyes, but she remained, staring impassively into the camera, her expression unreadable. No hint of why she was here, and no reason for me to care. I retreated, middle finger raised, knowing she wouldn't see it. If she had business, it was with Dad.

The doorbell rang again. And again. What the hell was she doing here? Was the world ending? Were zombies on her trail, and Dad’s mansion the only safe haven? Oh, well. She’d just have to be devoured.
