The sterile scent of disinfectant clung to Ana Wright, a constant companion in the operating room. At twenty-seven, she was a surgical prodigy, her hands moving with an almost unnatural precision.

“Dr. Wright! What should we do?” The nurse’s voice was a frantic echo in the tense silence.

Ana’s eyes, usually sharp and focused, darted to the heart monitor. Its rhythmic beeps faltered, then flatlined. A cold dread seeped into her bones. Her hands, usually so steady, began to tremble.

“Time of death…” Her voice cracked, a fragile sound in the vastness of the room. “10:50.”

Tears, hot and unstoppable, streamed down her face as she fled the operating room. This was her first—her first patient to die on the table. She ripped off her blood-stained gloves, tossing them into the bin with a violent slam that sent it toppling.

“I killed him,” she choked, the words a raw confession. The chief physician’s attempts to calm her were futile. “I killed him!” she screamed, the weight of it crushing her.

“Ana! It was an accident!” he yelled back, but she shook her head, unable to accept.

“I can’t…” Her voice dissolved into sobs as she walked away, out of the hospital, leaving her brilliant career, and her old life, behind forever. It was her last day at Life Hospital. She didn't know then, the death wasn't an accident at all.
