The peaceful Australian night was shattered not by crickets, but by static. Cora, nestled in her sleeping bag, grumbled at Max's attempts to find a cricket score on the radio. "Max, I'm trying to sleep."

His frustrated fumbling yielded not cricket, but a horrifying broadcast: "—defence forces have been overwhelmed. Parliament house has been destroyed... Attacks have also been reported in Washington, London, Paris, Beijing..." The voice dissolved into static. Cora shot up, eyes wide.

"Can you get that station back?" she urged. But the radio offered only snippets of chaos before Max gave up, switching it off. "I'm going to wake up Cam and Mel. Maybe their radio can get a decent signal."

Stepping out of the tent, Max froze. Cora followed, stepping out into a world transformed. The night sky blazed with silent streaks of fire, bathing the paddock in flickering golden light. "Max, what is this?" she breathed, staring at the unearthly spectacle.
