The Star and the Ocean (Book 1 in the Starborn Series)
May, an island native with a mysteriously pale complexion and deep blue eyes, lives a quiet life until a silver-haired stranger, Em, appears on her beach, sparking an unexpected connection and unveiling secrets that challenge everything May thought she knew about her past and the world beyond her island home. The warm rays of sunrise were only just starting to seep through the wooden slats of the window shutters.
May had been lying awake for quite some time, wrestling herself from a vague and formless dream. A dark mood had been waiting for her when she opened her eyes.
She usually walked the same route into town, and it was all so familiar—so much of the same thing day in and day out—that anything out of the ordinary should have caught her attention right away. But today she was so deep in a daydream she almost missed it: a mound of color off to her right beneath the shade of a cluster of palms. It was a person, sleeping.
After three days of the person remaining in the same spot, May decided something was wrong. Armed with a small paring knife, she returned to the beach, her heart pounding. The sleeping figure was a woman, not much older than herself, with long silver hair flowing from beneath a tightly drawn hood and an almost complete lack of color to her skin. As May leaned closer, the woman inhaled sharply, stretched, and rolled over, startling May. May picked up the woman's backpack, placing her knife beside her, and began rummaging through it. Suddenly, an unfamiliar voice rang out.
