Dive into a tale of sacrifice, unexpected connections, and the unyielding power of a mother's love. The persistent poking stirred me from the depths of sleep. I ignored it, burrowing deeper into my pillow. It came again, a rhythmic, insistent prod. Annoyed, I cracked open my left eye. Sam, my three-year-old Superman, stood beside the bed in his rumpled nightsuit, finger poised mid-poke, hair askew, eyes still crusty with sleep.
"Sammy is hungwy!" he announced, a sleepy grin spreading across my face. My little devil was up before me, as usual.
"What do you want to eat?" I asked, pulling him onto my lap and kissing his forehead. He grinned back, his hazel eyes bright.
"Sammy wants panky!" Pancakes. Of course. It was always pancakes.
I scooped him up and carried him to the bathroom. After he’d done his business and brushed his teeth, he handed me the towel.
"Sammy, can you please go to your room and play? Momma will be out soon." He nodded, running off to his toy-filled haven. He was a very respectful son.
Ten minutes later, with a fresh mouth and clear eyes, I headed to the kitchen to start the pancake batter. Just as I set the table, the doorbell reverberated through the apartment. I opened it to find Matt, my best friend, on the other side, hugging a pillow to his chest, hair ruffled, dark circles under his eyes. Looks like someone had a bad dream again.
