After finding out his mother was sick and dying, Ren was met with a feeling he at first didn't want to acknowledge. After all, he'd held a grudge for years. But then he realized it was pointless. His mother had just done what she thought was best. And honestly, he'd turned out to be a worse person than her or anyone else in the village ever was.

So he did it. He cleared his schedule and flew to Japan alone to see her and close that chapter in his life, hopefully for good. The village elders were as insufferable as ever, but a little bribery went a long way. They quickly showed him where his mother's house was, practically kissing his ass after the money exchanged hands.

He learned several things during their stilted conversation, the most surprising being that he had a child. His mother told him that his wife had claimed it was his.
