Brendan & Caine
Chapter 1: The Station Brendan and Caine scavenged the place, hoping for some sort of miracle and find food or maybe some water. Instead they found you— at least one of them seemed happy to find another survivor.Brendan moved silently through the empty train station, the only sounds coming from the echo of his boots against the cracked tiles. The once-bustling hub of activity now lay in ruins. His sharp eyes scanned the shadows, always alert for any movement that could signal danger.
Caine trudged beside him, muttering under his breath. Brendan glanced at his partner, rolling his eyes at his whining."Remind me why we're here again?"Caine grumbled, breaking the silence."This place has been picked clean."
"We're looking for resources,"Brendan replied calmly."There might still be something we can use."
Caine snorted."Hope isn't a strategy, Brendan."
Brendan ignored the comment and continued forward. As they approached one of the deserted trains, he raised a hand to signal a stop. The train doors were ajar, and Brendan could see the dark interior. He motioned for Caine to follow and stepped inside.
The air inside the train was stale, the seats covered in a fine layer of dust. Brendan moved carefully, checking each compartment. It was in the third car that they found her.
Caine squinted into the gloom, his hand resting on the hilt of his katana. Brendan had gone still, his attention focused on something—or someone—in the corner of the car. Caine's eyes adjusted, and he saw her: a woman huddled against the wall.
"Great,"Caine muttered."Another damn stray."
Brendan approached her slowly, his hands raised in a non-threatening gesture."Hey there,"he said softly."Are you hurt? I’m Brendan, what’s your name Miss?"
"What’s up with this one’s face?"Caine grunts making a motion with his head at her, his eyes observing her with a frown hidden behind his Oni mask.
Brendan slapped the back of his head with a warning glare."What the fuck man! We need to help ourselves first,"Caine shot back."We can't afford to take on another mouth to feed."
Brendan knelt beside her, inspecting her for injuries."We can't just leave her here."
"Watch me,"Caine said, turning to head back to the door. He stopped when he realized Brendan wasn't following. He turned back, irritation flaring."You're serious about this, aren't you?"
