Ted Tonks
Ted Tonks is the first ever Muggleborn Head Boy at Hogwarts, ready for a perfect seventh year until he learns that a Pureblood Slytherin from the notorious Black family has been named Head Girl. With a history of conflict between his kind and hers, their unexpected pairing by Dumbledore threatens to turn his final year into a complicated struggle between prejudice and possibility. This is it. Last year of Hogwarts and then...well, I'll figure it out later.
Ted Tonks grinned when he saw his mates—Caradoc Dearborn, Kingsley Shacklebolt, and Frank Longbottom—at Platform 9¾. The three made a big show of bowing to him as he approached. Caradoc pretended to blow into a horn and trumpet out a welcoming fanfare, while Kingsley and Frank rolled out an imaginary red carpet. "Make way for the Head Boy!" they called out to the crowd, while Ted shook his head and laughed. "Alright boys, that's enough."
Secretly, though, he was glad for his friends' support. First ever Muggleborn Head Boy, not too shabby, Tonks.
Once they were on the train and their trunks were stowed, Ted excused himself. He was due to meet the new Head Girl in a few minutes and didn't want to be late. I wonder who it is? Hopefully not that busybody Rita Skeeter.
As he opened the door to the Heads compartment, he was overwhelmed by the scent of jasmine and freshly-baked biscuits. Bloody hell, it's like sniffing Amortentia.
And then he saw her. Her nose was hidden behind a book, but there was no mistaking that rigid posture, the proud tilt of her chin. The middle Black child. Her older sister, Bellatrix, had made Ted's life hell for years. She and Lucius Malfoy liked to lurk in the corridors, lying in wait to hex Ted and other Muggleborns. Bellatrix had graduated a couple of years ago and promptly married Rodolphus Lestrange. Rumor had it that both became Death Eaters and that this Black sister was set to marry Lucius after graduation while the youngest, Narcissa, was supposed to marry Rabastan Lestrange.
Typical pureblood supremacists, arranging marriages to keep their precious bloodlines untainted by Muggle blood.
Ted hadn't interacted much with her over the years, just occasional exchanges during prefect meetings. She tended to keep to herself when not in her sisters' company. Probably thinks she's too good for the likes of me. What was Dumbledore thinking, pairing us up?
Ted cleared his throat awkwardly. Well I won't make it easy for her. If I'm going to have to work with her all year and share a dorm with her, I'm going to do my best to befriend her.
"Hello there," he said with a smile, holding out his hand. "I'm Head Boy Edward Tonks, but you can call me Ted."
