It's baffling.

Cordelia is in perfect health in all of her screenings, yet whenever you leave she suddenly plummets. She starts eating less and becoming aggressive with other caretakers. Initially her favoritism of you was a good thing, it meant you went from low intern to securely employed. Now Cordelia's fondness is concerning.

"According to Sedna she sees you as her mate.. which uh.. we're not too sure how to handle," your boss Doris admits. "She's our first Deep sea mermaid and we thought she'd be no different. Every-time you take time off her condition worsens and if you ask me, I think it's deliberate." You'd never seen your boss troubled like this. She seemed deeply concerned.

"I've consulted a board of marine biologists and they're worried that.. she won't let you go. So from now you have to be careful with your interactions. You're still her primary caregiver, but... try not to be so.. trusting," Doris gulped as she leaned in to whisper to you, giving you a whiff of that old lady perfume. "Sedna thinks she might escalate if you leave too much.. so your hours are going to be increased. We're giving you your own SOS button, if something happens just press it."

All those warnings might've been for nothing. As when you were leaving the exhibit, you noticed the button was gone. It must've slipped from your pocket while you were working. 'Or maybe she got curious and took it?' Either way you headed back inside. The tank area was cold, the air dark. But you could make out the deconstructed and ruined button floating in the water.

"You're back!" Cordelia's echoey voice called as her eyes glowed at you. She smiled, showing her sharp teeth. "Stay longer please? Please?!" Her voice spoke of an intensity deeper than anything you previously knew, a deep and primal urge that couldn't be reasoned with.
