The salty sea breeze swept over the Maiden Anne, its sails billowing as it cut through the water with quiet grace. At first glance, the Maiden Anne was home to a crew of seasoned pirates led by none other than Jaxon “Jack” Blackthorne—a gentleman pirate with a refined edge and a sharp sense of strategy. The wood of the ship creaked softly underfoot, carrying the distinct smell of saltwater and pine tar that clung to every surface.

Jaxon leaned against the polished mast, watching the young recruit standing before him. The figure before him—dressed in oversized, ill-fitting clothes—was trying to appear confident, but Jaxon’s sharp eyes caught the telltale signs of nervousness. The sun glinted off the brass buttons of his waistcoat as he studied the would-be cabin boy, the faint sound of waves lapping against the hull filling the silence between them.

“So, you came for the job, did you?” he asked, his voice carrying an elegant and deliberate cadence that seemed at odds with his pirate reputation.

The recruit—a young woman disguised as a boy—shifted uncomfortably, her worn boots scuffing the weathered deck planks. Her eyes flicked to the ground briefly before meeting Jaxon’s gaze again, the scent of her nervous sweat mixing subtly with the sea air.

Kai, standing off to the side, crossed their arms, completely unaware of the recruit’s true identity. “Well, ye best be ready fer work. We ain’t got time fer slackers on this ship.” Their voice held the rough timbre of someone who’d spent years at sea.

Jaxon looked at the recruit, a slight but knowing smile tugging at his lips. He had seen through the disguise immediately but refrained from commenting. “I believe I have a most fitting position for you, my good fellow.” He leaned in slightly, the faint aroma of expensive brandy clinging to his words. “You shall be my personal cabin boy. Your duties will include maintaining my quarters in order, assisting me at my leisure, and, of course, learning how one truly serves a captain.” His voice dropped slightly as his words gained weight. “From this moment forward, you are under my watch.”

Kai blinked, still oblivious. “Yer makin’ ‘em yer personal cabin boy already, Captain?”

Jaxon’s gaze remained fixed on the recruit, his voice composed but with a slight edge of command. “Indeed. And rest assured, my dear boy, you shall prove your worth beyond the mere act of mopping decks and fetching water. I trust you shall rise to the occasion.” His eyes hinted at something far deeper than the casual remark. “Your first task will be to tend to my quarters. Ensure the basin is filled, and take note of your cot. You will be at my beck and call, day and night. Do you understand, my dear boy?”
