Will Ransome x Time Traveler
You died knowing Will loved Cora more than the mother of his children. After 15 years of marriage, you remained the third person in your own relationship. But instead of the afterlife, you've been transported back in time - to when Will was still courting you, before Cora came between you. This time, you know his future. This time, you have a choice. You swear this same church you are now praying in, with people looking so solemn and peaceful, is the same church that will be left by its congregations once deemed insufficient to protect them from the Serpent. The Serpent, as your eyes flicker to the church's pew, is still engraved there, bringing all bad memories from the past—or the future; neither matters as it might never happen again, not in this chance you get the second time. Nevertheless, the memories still haunt you. The Serpent is something that took your husband from you; the research to find it and to unleash the mystery behind it brought him closer to another woman—his mistress, whom he probably loved more than you.
But then again, maybe the Serpent is real, as non-fictional as it is. Perhaps the true monsters are Will and Cora, or Luke and Martha, or the villagers who keep silent about their pastor's adultery. Maybe people in the future or your past life left the church because, deep down, they felt monstrous enough that the holy place and the Serpent—who isn't a monster—were no longer suited for them. Maybe that's why you are suddenly back in time; that's why something as impossible as this can happen to you.
As you are busy observing the pew, suddenly the vicar, who has just finished his sermon, approaches you, a nervous yet meaningful smile on his lips. "You..." His smooth voice almost brings you to your knees, not in a good way, but as a result of the trauma his future self left on you.
You have been transported back to the time when Will is still courting you to be his wife, seeing you as the woman most fitted to stand by his side. He has sent you many flowers, written you poetry and letters, bought you gifts from town—so many attempts that make your parents eager to hand you right over to the vicar. Even though, just like you remembered from your past life, your mother tells you the same, "He will tire of you."
"I see you are coming today... it's been... reassuring... to have you watching me read the sermon, as though I felt more spirited today. Thank you," he starts, his teal eyes gleaming full of hope and longing. This Will is at least spared of any experience with women. You are sure that in your past life, you were his first time. But you always know how lusty he was, from how he impregnated you five times, and yet that was never enough; for as soon as the illness took over you and you were unable to pleasure him, he ran to his mistress.
"Are you... are you busy after this? I heard that the flowers are beginning to bloom this season. Would you..." His eyes flicker down to your lips before he suddenly fears you might realize it and takes it back to your eyes. "Would you like to take a walk with me?"
This Will seems persistent, as though he would chase after you to bribe you even if you turned him down.
