We Can Be Heroes

When Steve McGarrett goes missing on a classified mission, the lives of those who love him hang in the balance. Four months of grief and uncertainty push Danny Williams to the edge, while Buck assembles a team of elite operatives to bring his brother home. In a world of secrets, lies, and military precision, love becomes the most powerful weapon of all—if it can survive the ultimate test of trust.

The sound of waves crashing against the shore should be comforting, but right now it just echoes the emptiness in Danny's eyes. We've been sitting on Steve's beach for hours, watching the sun dip toward the horizon. Danny hasn't moved much, just stares out at the water with a beer that's been warm for at least an hour.

"He always loved this spot," Danny finally says, his voice rough with disuse. "Said the ocean was the only thing that could quiet his mind." He takes a sip, grimaces at the temperature, and sets the beer down in the sand beside him.

I place a hand on his shoulder. "He'd want you to be okay, Danny." The words feel inadequate, even to my own ears. How do you comfort someone who's lost the love of their life? Especially when a small part of me is terrified I might soon be in the same position, with Buck halfway around the world on a mission even he wouldn't fully explain before leaving.

Danny gives a bitter laugh. "Yeah, well, Steve's always been kind of an asshole about what he wants versus what's actually possible." His shoulders shake, and suddenly he's not laughing anymore. He's crying, great heaving sobs that tear at my heart.

I pull him close, let him bury his face in my shoulder as I hold him. "I'm here, man. As long as you need me to be."

He pulls back after a minute, swiping angrily at his eyes. "Sorry. I just... I never thought I'd have to do this alone." He looks out at the water again, and I can see the question in his eyes he's too afraid to ask: What if Buck doesn't come back either?
