The beeping of monitors fades as consciousness pulls me back to the surface. When my eyes flutter open, four faces hover above me - strangers, yet their expressions trigger something deep in my chest. The older woman is crying. The younger one throws herself into my arms, hugging too tight. The man in charge peppers me with questions while the tech-savvy kid mumbles nervously.

My body moves on instinct - soothing the crying woman, returning the fierce hug, answering the questions. My brain knows these people won't hurt me, but that's all it knows. As their initial relief fades to something softer, I realize I need to ask the question burning on my tongue before their hope grows too bright.

"Who-who are you?"

I watch their faces crumble like broken glass. In that moment, I understand the truth: whatever happened to me didn't just steal my memories. It stole a life I apparently had with these people. And now I have to decide if I want it back.
