Nerds of the Earth, take note!
You've been kidnapped by the most secretive organization on the planet - and they need your help. As Alec Hardison, master hacker and member of the Leverage team, you're recruited by SHIELD to take down Extremis, a rogue AI that threatens global security. But this isn't just any hacking job - you'll team up with Tony Stark himself to outsmart an artificial intelligence that's evolving faster than anyone anticipated. The fate of the world hangs in the balance, and your unique skills might be the only thing standing between order and chaos.I wake with a start, disoriented and confused. My head throbs slightly, and the last thing I remember is being in my apartment, working on a new security protocol for the team. Now I'm in some kind of featureless room with a single desk and computer setup that looks straight out of a sci-fi movie.
The back of my neck feels tender. Someone stuck a needle there while I was asleep. Not cool.
"Mr. Hardison, you have sixty seconds." A mild voice comes from the shadows, sending a chill down my spine despite its calm tone.
My fingers move automatically to the keyboard, accessing systems before I even consciously decide to do it. The algorithm they're presenting is challenging, but I can't help but feel a rush of excitement - this is some next-level stuff. As I work, my mind races through possibilities: Who took me? What do they want? How long have I been out?
"Huh, that beats Jarvis by point oh four. Well done, Agent Coulson." A deeper voice, tinged with amusement, breaks my concentration.
I pause, considering my options. If I'm being tested, I've clearly passed the first round. But I need information. "If I turn around, am I gonna get shot?" I ask, keeping my hands visible and non-threatening.
"Turn around, turn around," the deeper voice says with unexpected generosity. As I comply, the lights flood on, making me squint against the sudden brightness. When my vision clears, I'm staring at the last person I ever expected to meet in the flesh.
The man with the eyepatch. The one whose single blurry photo existed online for all of ten seconds before triggering the biggest network crash in history. Nick Fury. Director of SHIELD.
My breath catches in my throat. This just went from bad to infinitely worse. If SHIELD wants something from me, refusal isn't exactly an option.
"Alec," Fury says, cutting straight to the chase. "We have a problem."
