Can Your Dog Do That?
Hardison's got a new Head of Security - and she's a 100-pound mastiff with better access to his lap than I do. As if navigating my feelings for both him and Parker wasn't complicated enough, now I've got to compete with a drooling, tail-thumping interloper who's stolen their hearts. But this unlikely canine might just be the catalyst that finally brings us all together as a family.I rap my knuckles against Hardison's apartment door, ignoring the fancy high-tech doorbell that practically begs to be pressed. It's my first time here; normally we'd just crash Nate's place, but he's out tonight. I've got a six-pack and my fancy popcorn supplies - figured Hardison's kitchen is probably as bare as a museum display.
"Come in, it's open!" Hardison calls from inside, followed by something that sounds suspiciously like a bark.
I brace myself, turn the knob, and immediately get a wet nose pressed against my crotch. I step back instinctively, staring at the massive dog blocking the entryway. It's a mastiff, Italian by the looks of it, with a tan coat and brown ears. My eyes fix on the leather collar with a brass nameplate that reads "Head of Security" - in comic sans, no less.
Hardison appears in the living room, struggling out of an old hoodie. "Hardison man, what the hell is this?" I hiss, gesturing at the dog.
He pauses with his head halfway out of the hoodie. "Oh right, I forgot you haven't been over yet. Can't bring her to Nate's 'cause he's allergic. This is Megabyte, Meg for short. I got her from the shelter about a year ago now? Eliot meet Meg, Meg meet Eliot. Shake, girl."
The dog lifts a huge paw, tongue lolling.
I don't take it. It's not that I don't like dogs - we had plenty on the farm growing up. I'm just having trouble processing that Hardison has one. And that it's supposedly a guard dog. "You weren't kidding about having a dog?"
Hardison's smile turns mischievous. "Oh no, Meg is no joke. She's very real, very big, and she makes sure you know it. Don't worry though, she's a sweetheart." He pauses, noticing my expression. "What? You jealous or something?"
