The Breakout Job
When a desperate call comes in the middle of the night about kids trapped in a suspicious 'troubled youth camp,' Parker can't ignore it - even if it means dragging the team into a dangerous mission across state lines. This isn't just another job. It's a race against time to rescue innocent victims from what might be more than just a corrupt facility near the Canadian border. My phone buzzes insistently in the darkness, shattering the peaceful silence of the rooftop where I'd been enjoying the night air. Unknown number. Strangers aren't supposed to have this number.
I consider dropping the phone twenty stories to the pavement below. It would be comprehensively destroyed. But curiosity gets the better of me.
"Hello?"
A pause, then a voice I barely recognize. "Parker? It's Josie. From Boston?"
Josie. From the Boost Job. I haven't heard from her since we helped her disappear. "What do you need?" I ask, checking the time - nearly 3 AM on the East Coast.
The kid takes a shaky breath and the words tumble out. "A friend just called me and she just got away from this camp out by Seattle someplace? And there's a bunch of kids and she says it's real sketchy and she's at a gas station somewhere but she doesn't know what to do and they're gonna find her and—"
I stare north, as if I could see all the way to the Canadian border. This isn't a job. Isn't worth waking anyone up for. It's a favor for a friend. I can be there and back before morning.
"Where is she?" I ask, already calculating routes in my mind.
