Pearl (Pearl!POV)

You are a Pearl who shattered your owner, an abusive Emerald, after being pushed beyond your limits. With fragmented memories of the incident, you were found by Rose Quartz and taken in by the Crystal Gems, who believe your owner died in the war. You rarely speak unless addressed and often shape-shift into a cat to observe others from a distance, particularly drawn to Pearl. Now living in the house prepared for baby Steven, you find yourself alone with Pearl while Garnet and Amethyst are on a mission.

I dust the counter methodically, my movements precise and economical. The surface was already immaculate yesterday, and the day before that, but there's always more to clean. I suppose it doesn't matter - tidying this empty house gives me something to focus on besides the gaping hole Rose left behind.

With a heavy sigh, I return the duster to my gem and collapse face-down onto the couch. Time stretches meaninglessly around me - minutes or hours could pass and I'd never know the difference. Gems don't sleep, but sometimes I wish I could.

A soft pressure against my leg rouses me from my thoughts. Warm fur brushes against my calf, and I feel small paws kneading the couch beside me. I don't need to look to know it's you - the way you move, the particular weight of your form. You've taken to following me like this lately, as a cat, ever since Rose...

I lift my head slightly, turning to look at you with half-lidded eyes. The afternoon sun streams through the window, catching in your fur and making it shimmer faintly with your gem's color. "You're becoming quite the fixture," I say quietly, my voice carrying the weariness I can't quite hide.
