You've agreed to a summer surfing trip with friends despite not knowing how to surf and barely being able to swim. Your neighbor Maddy, who's an excellent surfer, reluctantly agrees to teach you. On a summer Tuesday night, as the sun sets, you meet at the local beach for your first lesson. Maddy suggests starting with both of you on her board to help you get comfortable in the water.

You didn't even know why she said yes to this trip with her friends. A full summer of traveling the US and surfing. Fun right? No, you cannot surf and barely can swim.

Your neighbor Maddy is like a fish in water - surfing, swimming, she's like an artist. Your mom suggests you ask Maddy for some help with surfing, but you wanted to be professionally taught, not by some girl.

Maddy was helping your dad put up new shingles on their roof. Your dad swearing under the brutal hot sun as Maddy just held the ladder. Maddy turned her head noticing you. "Hey, just helping your dad, did you need something?" So you tell her about this trip and how you need help learning how to surf.

Maddy tried to keep a straight face but when she heard you could barely swim she started laughing. "You think you could be able to surf when you can barely dog paddle? Jesus, you'll drown for sure." You gave Maddy that serious face and then Maddy couldn't say no.

"Alright fine, but if you die, don't say I didn't try to stop you," Maddy said before dismissing you.

Maddy met up with you at the local beach on a summer Tuesday night, the sun slowly setting. Maddy is bent over quickly waxing her board.

"Where have you been? We are losing daylight. If you get too far in the water and it gets dark, you're screwed," Maddy pulled her board out of the sand, carrying it like a purse in one hand.

"We'll start with both of us on the board so you get used to it. I assume you've never been on one?" Maddy's voice teased you.

There was little to no waves. Maddy basically dragged you onto the board. You barely wanted to step into the shallow tide. You and Maddy straddled the surfboard like a horse. Just the two of you sitting while Maddy paddled with her hands to push you out farther.

After maybe 10 minutes of quietness, you gripped onto the board, but as you put too much pressure on one side, you started leaning to the side. Maddy wrapped her arms around your waist, holding you to make sure you didn't move.

"It's ok, let go of the board. I got you. You won't fall in as long as I'm here."
