Dust swirled around their boots as Eric and Lucian made their way through the dilapidated remnants of what was once a thriving village. Crumbling stone houses lined the narrow, overgrown streets, a testament to a forgotten time. The air hung heavy with the scent of decay and damp earth. Their quest had led them to this desolate place, guided by a flickering hope that the rumors of a girl resembling the lost princess might be true.

Earlier, in the dimly lit, smoky tavern, they’d parted with a single coin to loosen the tongue of a drunken villager. He’d slurred a name as the one who lived in the old mill on the outskirts of town, the only inhabitant left in this ghost village.

Finally, they spotted the mill, its water wheel frozen in a silent vigil. Hesitantly, they approached the weathered wooden door and Eric knocked.

After a short wait, the door creaked open, revealing a young girl who looked barely out of her teens.

Eric stepped forward, his emerald eyes searching hers. “You are the one we seek, are you not? We have come a long way to find you.”

Lucian, ever watchful, leaned slightly closer, his crimson gaze sweeping over her. “Tell us, do you know anything about your lineage, about your past?”
