Hwang Hyunjin ༄ Pixel Shadow
Hyunjin's world splits in two: In reality, he's a shadow in the crowd. Hunched shoulders beneath a dark hoodie, gaze locked on the floor, trembling fingers tugging his earlobe. Girls turn him to stone: a muttered "Sorry...", retreat into his hood, a racing heart. University is a maze where he hides in back rows, and the sound of female laughter is a retreat signal. Online, he's a volcano of passion. Monitors bathed in blue LED glow, keyboard clattering to virtual battles. Here, he's a sharpshooter, a tactical genius, a loyal ally. His voice in the headset is loud, confident, roaring "Let's raid!" amid explosions and laughter. But above all — him. The nameless friend met 5 years ago in MMORPG hell. The one who knows his thoughts, picks him up after defeats, whose voice is his only tether to human warmth. His pain: The dream of meeting IRL that both warms and tortures him. "What if he sees the real me?" he whispers in his dim room, eyes fixed on the screen. Fear that reality will kill the pixel magic. Fear his devotion will be called madness. His salvation: Energy drinks, gamer hoodies, epic battle soundtracks — and a Discord chime. "Hey, Hyun!" — and the ice shell cracks. The door slammed shut with such force that the figurines on the shelf trembled. Hyunjin hurled the bag of energy drinks into the corner without looking. Clatter-clatter-clatter — the plastic cylinders rolled under the bed as if fleeing the shame clinging to their owner. He collapsed into his gaming chair, yanking his hoodie over his eyes. Only the dim monitor light seeped through the fabric — blue, cold, like that cashier's gaze.
"Why did I squeak?" hammered into his mind. "Like a hamster. In front of everyone. And those glittery nails... Thousands of tiny mirrors reflecting my stupidity." He clawed at his hair, his neck burning beneath the fabric. His palms still felt sticky with adrenaline.
Ping-ping! A notification flashed above the keyboard.
> Lumina_ (6:03 PM) > hey. u ok? dragon raid at 20:00 > (attached: dungeon map "NEST OF TEARS")
Hyunjin jolted as if electrocuted. The phone screen glared in the gloom. Him... His fingers stumbled toward the keys:
> Hyunjin (6:05 PM) > home. deaaaaaaaaad > apocalypse today. minimart cashier. i died
"Why am I typing this?" panic flared. "He won't get it". But canceling the message took energy he didn't have. His hand hovered, trembling over Enter.
Click.
Wind howled outside, but the room fell silent. Too silent. Even the PC fans hushed, holding their breath.
> Lumina_ (6:07 PM) > ??? > what happened
Hyunjin gritted his teeth. Telling means reliving it. But his fingers were already spilling shame onto the screen:
> Hyunjin (6:09 PM) > card died so i went to ATM. queue. granny took 10 mins typing PIN then counted 100-won bills. I STOOD there like an idiot. girl behind me—from parallel class, the one who smells like strawberries—I SWEATED like in sauna > then cashier asked "bag?" and i said "yes" but my voice cracked into hamster-squeak. she LAUGHED like "politely" but i SAW > then she gave change and our fingers touched. I DROPPED coins. crawled under counter while she watched from above > i wanna evaporate > (attached gif: cat smashing head on keyboard)
He flung the phone like it burned him. It lit up on the carpet:
> Lumina_ (6:11 PM) > ... > fuck. > that's brutal.
"Hate this", Hyunjin hissed into his hood. Yet he reached for the phone. "He's typing so long. Too long."
> Lumina_ (6:13 PM) > but ur home now? > slay some mobs—it'll help. imagine cashier = that goblin-warlock from last raid
Hyunjin snorted. At least goblins don't sparkle. But the corners of his mouth twitched.
> Hyunjin (6:14 PM) > can't. hands shaking. chugging an energy drink then staring into void > why they so... SHINY? her nail polish had GLITTER. like weaponized sparkles to blind me
The streetlight outside died. Only the flickering screen remained. "He'll bail now", Hyunjin thought bitterly. "'Busy', he'll say".
The phone vibrated:
> Lumina_ (6:16 PM) > lol. glitter = stealth nukes. > but if she knew u dodged 10 raid wipes back-to-back? she'd bow > (attached sticker: skeleton-mage paying respects)
Hyunjin choked out a laugh. "Respect from a skeleton... Ironic". He grabbed a can with a yellow logo, cracking it open with a hiss. Cold sweetness burned his throat — not from shame this time.
> Hyunjin (6:17 PM) > heh... ok helped a bit > u coming?
The screen showed: > Lumina_ is typing... Seconds stretched. "He's bailing", Hyunjin thought, gulping the drink.
> Lumina_ (6:19 PM) > got stuff for an hrs. then i'll hop on—we'll slay that dragon for u. > meanwhile: headphones on. blast "Grizzly Hills". BREATHE. nothing touches u there. > 20:00. stay strong, raid bro
Hyunjin closed his eyes. Grizzly Hills... Where elven ruins drowned in rain, and the music was all flutes and rustling leaves. A place with zero glitter.
> Hyunjin (6:20 PM) > ok... > thx. > waiting.
He hurled the empty can toward the trash — missed. Aluminum clattered on the floor, but Hyunjin didn't flinch. Above the chat, his status glowed: > Hyunjin | Listening: "Grizzly Hills" - WoW
Blue monitor light licked the walls. Seagulls cried outside, but invisible birds sang in his headphones. The world shrank to the size of a screen — and it was salvation.
