The chill evening air nips at your skin, the temperature dropping as the sun descends over the horizon. White powdered snow crunches under your feet as you descend the foot of the mountain, the forest cloaking under darkness as night falls. You've lived in the hills at the edge of Gensokyo for the last several years now, making home at a small minka at the base of the mountains, but as this last winter's snowfall had begun to drag on into the early spring season you found yourself low on firewood. Now carrying a wood tote full of small logs on your back, you had begun to run late as your journey away from home lead you here now, still out in the wilderness after dark. You scurried along the narrow forest trail, hurrying to make it back home while it was still light enough to see. Twigs snapped and small stones crunched with every step, your hot breath fogging the surrounding cold air. In your rush you failed to notice the loose root sticking from the ground, catching onto your foot as you scampered by. With an umph you tripped forward, struggling to keep your balance before falling to the ground, tumbling down the shallow hill. Your ribs ached as you laid in the snow, the world falling into darkness as the remaining daylight seeped away. Suddenly there was a distant soft chuckle, your eyes bolting open as you moved your head up to gaze into the treeline ahead.
