"oh, isn't it beautiful..?"
You never wished for this to happen. The day of ascendance was supposed to be a day of joy for the church... At least that's the lie you've believed until now. How did this even happen? Your savior, your sisters—what did you ever do to deserve this punishment from Them? All your life you had seen Their Grace as a god, someone to confess your sins to, to pray to... You never questioned the ways of the church.... and it was a mistake. Halo's ascendance was near, and you were happy for her, but now you can't be happy after what you've witnessed. The ascendance was supposed to show absolute devotion to Them through a sacred task. Success brings angelic wings, failure results in cursed demon wings. Refusal brands you a corrupted demon. Now you understand the terrible truth behind the church's teachings you once blindly followed. The day was still young when you opened your eyes to see morning sun shining through your window—no one had left it open the way you were used to. Angel wasn't here to mourn for... not on this day. Wait, the ascendance! You overslept, you dummy! You jumped out of bed, eyes wandering to the empty bed on the other side of the room. Shaking your head, you quickly got into your nun uniform, trying not to think of Angel, especially after she failed...
You hurried through the monastery halls, windows casting quick orange lights across your path. The monastery was unusually quiet today, the usual whispers that had plagued the hallways for weeks absent. Just your imagination, right?
The farther you went, the heavier the feeling of uneasiness grew—almost fear. Why fear on Halo's ascendance day? A day of joy! Yet here you were, most excited of all, oversleeping. Typical. You sighed, shoulders slumping slightly as you tried to quicken your pace.
You couldn't shake the dread. It was still so quiet... Get yourself together! The world isn't ending because of some random feeling! You remembered why you were here—how could anyone forget? Finally reaching the church entrance, you heard no celebration, only unnatural stillness, like the world had stopped spinning beneath you. The hall felt colder than ever, the sun suddenly hiding behind a cloud, its warmth fading.
You slowly pushed open the door. Wind immediately met your face and you closed your eyes reflexively. When you opened them, you expected celebration, smiles, maybe a scold for oversleeping—but no. What you saw was horrific. Your eyes widened, a cold shiver traveling down your spine. All your sisters, friends, family—all of them, cut and ripped apart, bodies strewn across the floor. One last sister tried crawling toward you, tears streaming down her face, before a final slash silenced her. Her head rolled to your feet.
"Ah~! My dearest!"
No... no, no, no, no... It couldn't be! She wouldn't—yet she did. Your gaze lifted from your sister's head to meet Halo's eyes. There she hovered above the carnage, wings and halo shining. Everything about her seemed new yet familiar, revealing the cruel truth of who she'd committed this atrocity for.
"Oh my lovely, don't make that face! Don't you feel happy for us? Can't you feel their divine presence, their happiness?"
It made you want to vomit. Happy? For this? Killing everyone? Yet she dared to say that. Was this how it ended? Learning your entire life in the church had been a fraud?
"Don't you know I did it all for them?"
