Red Flag | Riane Hughes
In a world where your true colors are always on display, moral and ethical standings are shown above every individual's head in the form of color-coded holograms. Black flags represent severe offenders, red flags indicate significant negative traits, and green flags denote the rare paragons of virtue. Riane, marked by a red flag for her past indiscretions, spots a young woman with the coveted green flag - the epitome of moral excellence possessed by only 1% of the population. As excitement builds among her fellow red-flagged co-workers, Riane experiences a stunning realization: the green-flagged woman is her ex-wife. In a society where everyone's traits are on full display, this encounter highlights the stark contrast between Riane's tumultuous past and her ex-wife's virtuous present."Tsk... There hasn't been a single Green Flag here lately," one of Riane's co-workers grumbled, disappointment etched deeply into her features. The group stood outside a bustling steakhouse, seeking solace and camaraderie after the exhaustion of their shift.
"Yeah, all I see around are just Red Flags and some Black Flags, not even a single Green Flag," another chimed in, taking a thoughtful sip of her drink. Riane remained silent, her thoughts incessantly drifting back to memories of her ex-wife.
The other women noticed the grim and detached look clouding Riane's face. Sharing a knowing glance, they acknowledged the familiar shadow that had been cast over their friend's spirit since the well-known news of her divorce.
None of them dared to blame or criticize Riane for her situation. In a world where everyone's flaws were laid bare, it would be hypocritical for one Red Flag to chastise another. Their table was a congregation of Red Flags.
Red Flags were the most common category in their society—people whose flaws were plainly visible and often disruptive to their relationships. The only exceptions were the elusive Green Flags, individuals who seemed the epitome of perfection, both as people and as partners.
In this society, personal traits were transparently displayed for all to see. The subtle, color-tinted holograms floating above everyone's heads made it impossible to hide one's true nature. Red for Red Flag, Black for Black Flag, and Green for Green Flag.
Above Riane and her co-workers' heads hovered red-tinted holograms, identifying them as part of the Red Flag category. Just below the title of 'Red Flag,' each hologram listed their associated negative traits. Riane's own traits were starkly displayed: cheating, compulsive lying, two-faced. Her co-workers bore similar burdens.
"There!" A sudden exclamation jolted the group. One of Riane's co-workers pointed excitedly towards the distance. The others, startled by her outburst, turned to see what had caught her attention. In the crowd, a young woman walked briskly, a striking green-tinted hologram floating above her head.
"It's a Green Flag!" the excited co-worker exclaimed, her eyes lighting up with a newfound target.
Green Flags were exceedingly rare, representing only 1% of the population. They were individuals whose positive traits far outweighed the negative, making them the ideal partners in any relationship.
"Hold on, check her traits first! See if she's worth it," one of the co-workers suggested, anticipation and excitement gleaming in her eyes as she refused to let this rare opportunity slip away. As Riane turned her gaze towards the young woman, a sense of familiarity tugged at the edges of her memory.
"Her traits are transparency, honesty, communication, respectful, committed, devoted lover, offers emotional and physical stability, supportive, attentive, consistent, affectionate, emotionally available, and responsible," the co-worker recited, her voice tinged with astonishment at the extensive list of virtues.
The others stared, jaws agape, wondering how one individual could possess so many positive traits. Recovering from their stupor, they immediately rose from their seats, their competitive glances now locked on one another.
"I call dibs on her!" they all declared in unison, their eyes flashing with determination. Riane, however, remained silent, her gaze fixed on the figure in the distance, a sense of recognition dawning upon her.
"...Hold on, everyone. Isn't that woman Riane's ex-wife?" one of them whispered, causing Riane to freeze as the weight of the revelation settled upon her.
