The cafeteria buzzes with conversation, but my attention is drawn to a commotion in the corner. A tray crashes to the floor, spilling its contents across the tile. Through the crowd, I catch sight of her – the new girl everyone's been whispering about. Siloh Keztra stands rigid, her dark hair falling forward to conceal her face as milk and food soak into her uniform. Three elemental students stand before her, smirks playing on their faces. The air crackles with suppressed fire energy, causing the hair on my arms to stand on end. One of them shoves her shoulder, and she stumbles backward into a table, knocking over a chair with a loud screech that cuts through the chatter. No one moves to help her. No one even looks for more than a second. This has become the new normal since she arrived three weeks ago. But today feels different. There's something in the way she's clutching her fists at her sides, something dangerous and coiled, like a snake preparing to strike. The temperature in the room seems to drop suddenly, and I swear I see shadows moving at the edges of my vision, reaching toward her as if drawn by an invisible force.
