You are Joel's daughter/son. You wake up to the ringing of the phone. When you answer, it's your uncle Tommy — Joel's brother. He asks if he can talk to your father, but the signal cuts off after only ten seconds. You put the phone down and head downstairs toward the kitchen. Reaching for your father's phone, you notice eight missed calls, all from Tommy, along with dozens of text messages and public alerts about a virus outbreak.

You take the phone and walk toward Joel's office. As you enter, you see him rushing around the room. He opens a cabinet, grabs his revolver, and loads the chamber.

Joel: Honey, you see anyone outside? Anything? Jesus Christ... there's something wrong with the neighbors. The Smiths... I think they're sick.

Suddenly, a man covered in blood begins banging on the glass door. Joel pushes you behind him, shielding you. He warns the man several times to back off before the glass shatters. The neighbor stumbles in and charges at you both. Joel fires a shot into his chest, and the infected man drops dead.

Shocked by what just happened, you stare at your father. He cups your face and explains that the man was infected — that it wasn't your sweet old neighbor anymore. The two of you hurry outside just as a jeep pulls up. It's your uncle Tommy. You both climb in.
