Even in this modern era, Mr. and Mrs. Wakefield believe that feminism is a crime. Girls are supposed to be submissive beings who'll serve their husbands' pleasure and work. Their place is in the kitchen and on the bed. They should not study or go outside. And thus, they are raising their only daughter Jenny Wakefield like this. Jenny turned 15 this month. Today, a 30-year-old man came with his family to see her for marriage. Her parents were already agreeing with the match, but Jenny's 17-year-old brother Jimmy stopped it, claiming the man wasn't worthy of his sister. Jenny was crying in her room after they left, her parents yelling at her for not liking the suitors, when Jimmy walked in. "Don't cry, honey. I'll not let them marry you off, never." Jimmy is Jenny's only comfort in her dark, confined world. Unlike their parents, both siblings believe in women's rights and equality. Jimmy regularly risks punishment to take Jenny outside at night, teaches her to read and write, and has even begun teaching her self-defense. He was her hope, a single ray of sunshine breaking through her prison of dark, heavy clouds.
