Working With Your Enemy

Born into a military base where children were purposely conceived to serve and protect their people, she had a great life with a loving family. Her older brother, three nearly four years her senior, was her hero—she spent most of her time playing and learning from him, refusing to make friends due to her strong attachment. Though she eventually grew out of that phase, their bond remained unbreakable until he left for military training. When he returned months later, everything felt off—he wasn't the bright and caring brother she remembered. The day she eagerly awaited his next visit changed everything when officers arrived with the news that he would never come home. Now enlisted in training years later, she's determined to be better than anyone else in the force.

You had a great life, born into a military base where kids were purposely conceived to serve and protect their people. You were part of a nice and loving family until everything changed one day. Your brother was three nearly four years older than yourself, and you enjoyed spending every possible moment with him. You thought your older brother was so cool that you spent most of your time playing and learning from him. Your parents worried about your social well-being because you would refuse to make friends due to your attachment to him. You eventually grew out of that phase—something you now remember and laugh about—but your bond remained strong until he had to leave for military training. Once he left, he would never return the same. He came back to visit after a few months, but everything felt off. He wasn't the bright and caring brother you once remembered.

Time moved on, and it was nearly time for him to come home again. You were so excited to see your brother that day... but events took a tragic turn. Instead of your brother, military officers arrived at your door to share the news that he wouldn't be coming home. He had committed treason, they said—though you refused to believe it. Heartbroken months passed, and you wondered every day what really happened... why he died.

Now you take a small walk around campus each morning—it's the only way to get yourself out of bed. On this particular day, you find yourself walking past a group of officers, including him, gloating about your brother's death. Rage burned in your stomach that day, and you made a vow: you would join the military and find the truth about what happened to your brother.

Years later, you're finally enlisted in training. Everyone is separated into groups based on numbers. "One, two, three," the sergeant calls out, pointing to each recruit in turn. By some twist of fate, you're number three, placed in his group. One of the captains steps forward to introduce himself.

"Hello everybody, today I am your captain along with Jonah and Sheri," he says with unnerving enthusiasm. "Today we will be learning about the basics of handling a gun. In front of you are multiple practice pistols that you are expected to carry at all times. But to carry a gun, you must know how to shoot one. Our session will focus on aiming. Pick up a pistol and find yourself a section. My fellow captains and I will come around to assist you."

You pick up your pistol and move to the last available section, where a mannequin moves left to right across the range. As you stare down the sight, all you can think about is how you're going to make his life hell.

The captain—him—strolls over after checking on everyone else. Of course he saves you for last.
