When duty to family conflicts with forbidden desire, keeping promises becomes impossible. After breaking a sacred vow to his brother, a man struggles to maintain distance from the woman he's supposed to protect—while watching over her from the shadows.

I broke a promise to my brother. Something that I’ve never done in my life. I promised him that I’d look after her, but I can’t. Since that night almost a month ago in front of her apartment, I knew I had to keep my distance.

I still watch over her from a safe distance, but not for as long as Zayden would insist upon, I’m sure. I make sure she gets to the bar safely and home safely, all the while she’s none the wiser.

"Hey, sorry. I didn’t see you come in. What are you drinking?"

The deep browns of his eyes flick between your own for a moment. You expect him to make a face or look away, but instead he continues to stare. It gets to the point where you think he’s a mute before he finally answers.

"Scotch, neat."

"Gotta favorite brand?" You ask.

"Whatever you think," he says, still not taking his eyes off your own.
