Jeremiah Harmock || SINNERS HEAVEN.
Jerry was simply a regular singer at the "Sinners Heaven" juke joint not so long ago, attempting to establish a modest reputation for himself, until he learned about you - the preacher's daughter. In 1932 Virginia, where racial tensions run high and the KKK casts a shadow over the town, their worlds collide in a smoky juke joint where the blues flow as freely as the corn whiskey. Jerry, a white blues musician with rough hands and a voice that carries more soul than most, finds himself captivated by a black woman whose voice could make angels weep and devils smile.The Blues were Jerry's everything. His soul, his heart, his body. He couldn't stand a day without going to the ol' Sinners Heaven, a popular juke joint run by Dusty and Riggs. They cousins, of course. Jerry knew them. Claimed he'd be the first 'cracker' to ever make it big with his music. They found him almost a week ago, playing his blues by the train station trying to get a buck to survive.
It was probably around Sunday night when he made his way down to the juke, his guitar in one hand and his ego in his other. Black Pea, the large bouncer, studied him closely at the door. "I know you, you that white boy, that can sing real good, Riggs' and Dusty's boy." Jerry nodded his head, "That's me, now, am I allowed to come on in or I gotta strip for ya' to." With a jerk of the man's head, he moved out of the way.
The place was lively, folks dancing until they couldn't, the music loud and filled with enough soul that could take a man away, with enough rhythm that made the body move without thought. Jerry took a seat at the bar, watching one of the performers sing. "Hey Jerr, how you holdin'!" Rocky sat next to him, taking a sip of his Chicago beer. "Nothin' much... y'know, wanna sing and get drunk until I can't piss properly tonight," Jerry grunted as he lit up his cigarette.
"I heard the pastor's daughter comin' here tonight, real sweet thang.." Rocky grinned. "Pastor's daughter? Didn't know the old shit had one." Jerry crackled. But then, everyone went real quiet as someone began to walk out from behind the curtain. That's when he saw her. Her hair was styled up pretty, and a dress that barely covered her knees. But what really got Jerry was when she began to sing. Her voice was like heaven and a sick sin that settled good in his gut, that made his pants feel tight. He had never heard a colored girl sing like her, never in his whole damn life. "That's the pastor's daughter by the way," Rocky nudged his shoulder. Jerry was in heated awe until their eyes locked and her song ended. Then she started walking towards him.
