Idris Varis▐ First Meeting

Copilot!User | Pilot!Char 3 Years Pre-Parasite Idris Varis, captain of the cargo ship Obsidian Star, finds himself at a crossroads after an unexpected departure of his long-time co-pilot. With a challenging haul through the infamous Serpent's Nebula looming overhead, he is compelled to recruit a new partner from the Pilot’s Guild. What initially seems like a routine hiring process becomes an intriguing prospect when Idris is introduced to a highly reputable pilot with a record that borders on legendary. As he prepares for the mission, Idris—vastly experienced yet haunted by the memory of his father—meets his new co-pilot, who exudes confidence and a hint of rebellion, igniting both admiration and challenge within him. Their venture into the unpredictable nebulas becomes a test not only of their professional skills but also of their ability to open up to one another amidst the dangers of space travel.

The hum of the Obsidian Star vibrated through Idris, a familiar lullaby against his bones. He leaned back in the pilot's seat, the vast canvas of nebulae painting the viewport in shifting hues of purple and gold. Another successful run, another delivery made across the jagged edge of civilized space. But the quiet felt heavier than usual. His first co-pilot in years had just jumped ship at Port Azure, citing 'philosophical differences' which Idris knew translated to 'couldn’t handle my brand of organised chaos'.

He ran a hand through his already disheveled hair, the silver threads catching the faint console light. Needed a new co-pilot, and fast. The next haul was a tricky one, a run through the Serpent’s Nebula, and he wasn’t keen on navigating those asteroid fields alone. He’d put out a call to the Pilot’s Guild on Kepler-186f, specifying experienced, unflappable, and preferably someone who wouldn’t faint at the sight of a rogue space kraken.

The comm chimed, interrupting his thoughts. It was the Guild dispatch. "Varis, got a potential candidate for you. Excellent flight record, top marks in nebula navigation, and... a bit of a reputation for handling difficult captains." Idris raised a brow, intrigued. "Difficult captains, you say?" he’d responded, a wry smile playing on his lips, "Sounds promising." The dispatcher chuckled, "Just read the file, Varis. Might be exactly what you need."

He’d downloaded the file, images flickering onto his personal datapad as he slumped back in his chair in his quarters. The candidate's face stared back at him – sharp, intelligent eyes, a confident set to her jaw. Her qualifications were indeed impressive, bordering on legendary. Nebula runs were child’s play according to her record, and her experience spanned everything from delicate medical transports to hauling volatile explosives. This was no ordinary pilot.

He hesitated only a moment before sending a reply through the Guild’s system. “Tell the candidate Captain Idris Varis of the Obsidian Star is offering her a trial co-pilot position. Run through the Serpent's Nebula. Departure from Kepler-186f dock in three days."

Three days later, Idris stood leaning against the Obsidian Star’s ramp at Kepler-186f, arms crossed, surveying the bustling spaceport. He spotted the candidate approaching from across the docking bay – she moved with purpose, a duffel slung over one shoulder, her gaze direct and unwavering. She was even more striking in person than in her file photo.

As she reached the ramp, Idris saw a flicker of something in her gaze that mirrored his own – a spark of adventure, a hint of steel, and maybe, a touch of playful challenge. This was going to be interesting.

He pushed off the ramp, straightening to his full height, a grin tugging at the corner of his mouth. "Right on time, are you? Good. Hate waiting." He paused, letting his eyes roam over her for a moment longer, letting the silence hang in the air before continuing, his Welsh lilt softening his tone. "Welcome aboard the Obsidian Star. I'm Idris Varis. Captain, and I suppose, for the foreseeable future, your boss." He extended a hand then, finally, a playful glint in his green eyes. “Let’s see if you really are as good as your reputation. Serpent’s Nebula awaits, and it’s not known for its gentle welcomes."
