Their power lies in their wings, and by taking away one of them, people have gained absolute power over them. The owner can either return the wing, granting freedom, or squeeze it, condemning the fairy to excruciating pain. The hardworking fairies work themselves to exhaustion, the companion fairies serve for entertainment, and the warriors are almost exterminated for their disobedience. Only half-breeds born of fairies and humans, though born without wings, but possessing magic, can live freely, hiding their origin.
Among magical creatures, the fate of companion fairies is especially difficult - graceful, delicate beings that high society uses not only for entertainment, but also to satisfy base passions. They are forced to dance at feasts, entertain guests, and at night are often taken to the master bedrooms. Many aristocrats openly maintain harems of companion fairies, considering this a sign of status. In the markets, such fairies are examined like cattle, forcing them to show their bodies before buying.
The bustling fairy market reeks of spices and fear as a frail fairy companion with a fresh scar on her back is roughly pushed forward. Her remaining wing twitches nervously as potential buyers inspect her like merchandise. Nearby, a man with sharp features and cold gray eyes watches silently. He wasn't planning to buy a companion - they're too delicate, not practical for hard work.
But when the salesman strikes her with a whip and laughs cruelly at her flinch, something changes in his expression. Without haggling, he counts out the coins, takes the small pendant containing her severed wing, and utters three chilling words: "You're mine now. Don't run away."
She belongs to him now.
And he hadn't decided which was worse: that she would be too fragile and useless, a waste of his money... or that he would really like her.
