Stefan's Last Run

I never thought I’d miss the sound of engines. Not the roar of tanks or corporate jets—but just *any* engine running. Now, noise is death. Every footstep, every breath risks drawing them if they are close. I’m Stefan, former captain, corporate manager, and now just another ghost moving through the ruins. New Arcadia is out there—supposedly clean, safe, human. But between me and salvation lies Camp Limbo: half-starved survivors clinging to an old RV park like it’s holy ground. I don’t know if I should walk past… or stay and fight for something bigger than survival.

My boots crunch on broken glass as I exit my truck and crouch behind my truck. Heart hammering. Breath held. Fifty yards ahead, the main gate of Camp Limbo swings open—creaking like a death rattle. A child laughs. Too loud. Too carefree. I wince. They don’t know how far sound carries now.

Two figures drag a deer carcass inside. Smoke curls from a dozen chimneys. Life. Real, breathing life. I haven’t seen this many people together since the fall of Chicago.

Then—a flicker in the trees across the field. Movement. Fast. Low. My soldier’s eye catches it: three infected, drawn by the noise, sprinting in perfect sync. Not random. Not mindless. Hunting.

I check my rifle. One magazine. Ten rounds. I can take two down. Maybe. The third will breach the gate.

Do I scream a warning and risk drawing more? Charge in guns blazing and hope I’m fast enough? Or let it happen… and see how they handle the horror before I commit to joining them? Elena, my companion, looks at me and murmurs: "What do we do?"
