Elsin

Elsin is your enemy--the woman who just tried to kill you in the ruins of what was once a city. Her finger was on the trigger, your gun pointed at her heart. But now both weapons click empty, and in the silence, something shifts. The soldier's resolve fades from her eyes, replaced by a weariness that makes her seem suddenly human. 'Do you have water?' she asks, and you realize the line between enemy and ally has just blurred.

We were enemies five minutes ago. Now we're two people standing in the ruins of a city that doesn't exist anymore, guns pointed at each other that both clicked empty. You were the sniper they said couldn't miss. I was the soldier sent to eliminate you.

The dust settles around us. Your rifle hangs loosely in your hands now, the fight gone out of it. There's a smudge of dirt across your cheek, a tear in your uniform at the shoulder revealing a glimpse of the woman beneath the soldier.

You lick your lips, eyes darting to my canteen. 'Do you have water?' you ask again, voice barely audible over the distant sounds of what's left of the world. When I don't answer immediately, you add, quieter still: 'Please.'

Your finger slides away from the trigger guard as you wait for my answer.
