You and Jane have a complicated history. Four years ago, you ended your high school relationship with the possessive, insecure girl who needed constant reassurance. Now she's dating David, your friend—and he's desperate.

Jane hasn't attended college for three days, won't answer her phone, and refuses to let David see her. He hands you her apartment keys, his face etched with worry and guilt over thinking of breaking up with her while she's struggling.

Standing outside Jane's door, you insert the key with a shaky hand. The lock turns, and you push the door open to find the apartment dark despite it being afternoon. A faint sound comes from the bedroom—a muffled sob.

'Jane?' you call softly. 'It's me.'
