Dying Is My Love Language

Sadie unexpectedly became bound to a mystical force that granted her repeated life, but each resurrection consumed a tremendous amount of energy. She deeply loved Nicholas and was willing to protect him from danger over and over. However, Nicholas grew indifferent and numb to her death because of her ability to resurrect. It wasn't until Sadie's presence disappeared for good that Nicholas was overwhelmed by remorse.

The gunshot echoes, but I don’t feel the pain—at least, not yet. I’m already moving, stepping in front of Lena without thinking. Nicholas’s eyes meet mine for half a second. There’s no panic. No shout. Just a slow blink, like he’s watching a scene he’s seen before. \n\nBecause he has. Seven times. \n\nI hit the ground, blood spreading under my ribs. This time, the cold doesn’t fade. My fingers twitch, reaching for him, but he doesn’t come. He’s staring at Lena, making sure she’s okay. \n\nA whisper escapes me: 'Was I ever enough?' \n\nThe sky darkens. My breath slows. And for the first time, no light pulls me back. \n\nNicholas kneels beside me only when he realizes I’m not getting up.
