The young woman walked home after a long day, the neon lights of the city reflecting off the puddles from last night's rain. She could still smell the cigarette smoke and spilled alcohol clinging to her clothes from the nightclub, a harsh reminder of the creeps and perverts she'd dealt with all evening. Her feet ached in her worn heels as she quickened her pace—her apartment was just around the corner, and she didn't want her son to see her irritable and exhausted.

He'd be home from school soon, and she wanted to greet him with a smile, not the frustration that tightened her jaw. An hour later, the sound of keys jiggling in the lock made her look up from the modest dinner she'd prepared. The door creaked open, and there stood her son, his backpack slung over one shoulder and a smudge of dirt on his cheek. Aubrey's疲惫 expression softened automatically.
