DAHLIA “Aria! Where are you?” I called out to my 6-year-old daughter. Looking around the foyer of our mansion I could not see anyone but one of the house staff, Maya arranging flowers in a vase in the centre of the hall. She lowered her head to me politely. “Ma’am, Aria is hiding in the master's office.” She said politely. “Thank you, Maya.” I said, shaking my head as I made my way through to my husband's office, my smile that I had taken years to perfect no matter how upset I may be inside threatened to falter. Aria was not my husband's daughter and because of it I know he disliked her going into his office no matter how much he tried to hide it, I often saw the irritation or annoyance on his handsome face. “Aria my darling?” I said entering the room, how did she know the code? A light giggle drew me to the desk and I shook my head crossing my arms. “Hmm it seems Ari isn't here, that’s fine I shall go have pancakes by myself. Covered in Nutella and strawberries.” I had barely turned around when I heard a clatter. “No, no mama! Wait for me, I want pancakes!” Came the sweet voice of my little angel. I turned around trying to hide the amusement from my face. “Ari you know you shouldn’t be here.” I said gently as I walked around the desk, about to lift her off the chair when she leaned against a large stack of files that stood on the desk sending them tumbling onto the floor. I flinched, closing my eyes as I moved her away not wanting her to get hurt in the process. “Oops… sorry mama… it was an accident.” She whispered, her large hazel-coloured doe eyes filled with fear. I shook my head cupping her chubby cheeks. “No my darling it’s ok, go wait in the kitchen, I will come and make you pancakes very soon.” She nodded, casting a final glance at the pile of files before she ran from the room. I bent down and gathered them up, placing them in a neat pile once again, I was almost done when my eyes fell on a velvet purple box. I paused frowning slightly as I picked it up, it was clear it had been under some of the files. Flipping it open I looked down at a stunning pendant and earring set, encrusted with the most exquisite Cadbury purple diamonds in the shape of hearts. My heart skipped a beat, was this my birthday gift? After all I was turning 30 tomorrow. It was beautiful! I looked at the square piece of card that contained my husband's writing. “To my world, my life and my heart. I love you baby – Warren.” I blushed lightly reading it, it wasn’t like Warren to call me baby. It was sweet. “Mama!” I heard Aria and quickly placed the note back, not able to stop the huge smile on my face. “Coming my darling!” I hurriedly called, replacing the rest of the files and hiding the jewellery box beneath it. I left the office, shutting the door behind me. I couldn't wait for tomorrow. ------- The following day dawned nice and bright like any other day, Warren left for work in a rush stating he had a meeting. I was confused, he didn’t even wish me a happy birthday nor did he give me a gift or flowers. I pushed it aside and got dressed, paying extra attention to my appearance. I had long black hair that fell to my hips and large grey eyes with a darker ring around the edge, I was blessed with thick lashes just like my late mother. I stood at 5 foot 7 inches, with womanly curves that many envied. All through the morning my mind was on Warren, maybe I was being unreasonable. After all, Warren was the CEO of my father’s multi-billionaire company, the El Nazari Empire. But surely, he couldn't forget his wife’s birthday, we hadn't even been married for a year yet. I kept myself busy once Aria had gone off to school, who had given me a balloon and give with excitement sparkling in her beautiful eyes. But it was hard to occupy myself, I kept looking at my phone waiting for a call. Lunchtime came and my patience had worn thin. Was he planning something? A surprise dinner date? But still a happy birthday would have sufficed. With my confusion and unrest growing, I decided I needed to see him. I text the driver to be outside in 2 minutes, I would head to the office myself. ----- I reached the huge El Nazari skyscraper that sat in the middle of the business district, my driver Markus opened the door and I got out making my way up towards Warren's office. I ignored the secretary who had quickly stood up. But I didn’t bother with her, after all, I was the acting head of this empire. I entered Warren’s office with a smile on my face, not missing the surprise on his face. “Dahlia darling, what brings you here?” He asked looking up from his desk. I crossed my arms under my breasts knowing how he loved them, sure enough, his gaze lingered there, and he swallowed. He walked over to me and pulled me into his arms, kissing me with a hunger that I always made my heart race. I kissed him back, relishing in the feel of his body and lips against my own. he pushed me up against the wall and I knew if I didn’t ask him now we would get busy. As his hand ran up my inner thigh and he deepened the kiss. I moaned against his lips as his hands reached my panties. I pushed him away slightly, i needed to focus. “Why do you think I’m here? Are you not forgetting something babe?” I asked breathlessly. “Forgetting something?” He looked unsure, pausing thoughtfully for a moment before he shook his head. “Come on, you haven't visited in a while…” His hand grabbed my ass , squeezing it and although I was tempted to give in, I had come for a reason. “Babe I-” He cut me off kissing me once again, as he lifted me up forcing me to lock my legs around his waist. ‘Oh lord.’ Pleasure rushed to my core as he pressed himself against me as he dominated my mouth. “Babe!” I said breaking away and forcing him back. He frowned but let me down and I adjusted my skirt shaking my head. Despite the slight ache in the pit of my stomach and my racing heartbeat, I stayed focused. I made my way over to his desk, pushing aside his files and sat on it, crossing my legs sensually. Giving him a moment to remember what today was. When it became clear he had no clue I frowned in disappointment. “I can’t believe this; we haven't even been married for a year and you are already forgetting my birthday? I turned 30 today Warren!” I said frustration and hurt clear in my voice. Warren's eyes widened in shock as he sat down, placing a hand on my thigh. “Darling, do you really think I could forget your birthday?” He asked in disappointment. I rolled my eyes, I didn’t believe him, trying not to focus on his hand on my thigh. Warren was a charming handsome man, one that every woman had wanted to marry but he had been smitten with me ever since he first saw me, it took me years to finally agree to date him and when I had he had been over the moon. “Well then, where is my birthday gift?” I asked challengingly, raising a perfect arched brow. Warren pulled me down, cupping the back of my neck and placing a sensual kiss on my lips, sending sparks of pleasure through me. I moved back trying to ignore how I was feeling. “I will not forgive you until you give me my gift.” I stated. “Of course, now where did I put it…” He said moving back and beginning to rummage in his draw. I smiled waiting, twirling a strand of my hair around my finger. Warren smiled and held up a 250-dollar wine gift card, a look of relief on his face. “Here, I know how you like your wine darling.” He said, passing me the card. I took it trying not to look confused, what about the beautiful jewellery set? Thank you…” I said softly, staring at the gold card in my hand. I was born and raised a princess, there was nothing I needed nor desired, however, I was expecting something a little more from him. “I will take you out to dinner tonight.”“Of course, I would like that. There’s this new Turkish restaurant that’s opened. I would love to go there.” I said, satisfied as I kissed him. That made sense, he would probably give her the set over dinner. “Perfect I’ll make a reservation.” Warren said glancing at his Rolex. “I do apologize darling, but I have a meeting with Dane Altaire.”“That upcoming businessman who's been a thorn in our side?”“Yes him, I'm trying to see if we can get him to work on this project with us. He may not have a high-status background, but he is an up-and-coming businessman and one whose name is becoming swiftly recognized everywhere.” I nodded, feeling a little guilty for showing up at work when he had so much going on. “Well, if you ever need me to sit in on a meeting, I would be happy-” I was cut off when the door was opened by Warren’s secretary, holding a tray of refreshments. Didn’t she know to knock? She was dressed rather revealingly. Her blouse was slightly sheer and showed off a lot of cleavage as well. Her blonde hair was tied in a stylish bun. She smiled politely. "Ah, Kendra, thank you.” Warren said, smiling at her as she placed the tray on the table. It was at that moment I felt my heart stop. Around her neck was the very pendant that I had seen the day before. She stood straight, tucking a strand of hair behind her ear and I felt dizzy. My ears rang with the sound of my thumping heart, and I could no longer hear what was being said. My eyes fixed on the matching earrings in her ears that glittered brightly, sending a stabbing pain right through me.
Chapter 2 2. An Impulsive Decision
DAHLIA “How dare you!” I shouted, pain and anger consuming me. I looked at the coffee that the cheating slut was offering me, and whacked it out of her hand not caring when she screamed, the burning hot coffee spilling over her. It wasn’t enough, the pain within my chest was suffocating me. “Dahlia!” Warren said as he grabbed some tissues patting Kendra’s shirt. My eyes stung with tears, how dare he! How dare he do this to me? What was I lacking? I pushed him away, knocking him into the tray that stood on the corner of his desk. Grabbing Kendra’s arm, I slapped her hard across the face. The resounding echo, loud in the now quiet room. She just stood there, whimpering in pain and fear as if she didn’t even know what she had done wrong. “Darling, listen to me, what is the matter?” Warren asked. I could hear the fear and worry in his voice. I turned angrily to him. “How dare you ask me that! You cheated on me! You gave her that set!” I shouted accusingly, my voice breaking as I pointed at the necklace and ears that sparkled, painfully reminding me of my worth. “Dahlia…” Warren said but it was too late, he knew I knew. “You bought those with money from this company. An insult to me! How could you!” I shouted, hitting his chest before I turned back to the woman who had destroyed us. “Take them off now!” Never had I hated anyone like this before. I hated how she was acting all terrified as she quickly removed the earrings with trembling fingers. I snatched the necklace from her neck, ripping it off, not caring that it left a red mark on her. Did she know how much she had hurt me? The pain that was threatening to consume me was squeezing around my heart. “There’s no place in this office for whores like you! Get out.” I hissed. She glanced at Warren who was too worried to care as he looked at me. She broke into sobs as she rushed from the room. I now turned my full attention to my shell-shocked husband. A cheater… “You slept with her did you not?” I asked, although deep down I knew the answer, maybe I just wanted to hear a no. “I…”“Did you or did you not?!” I shrieked, grabbing the front of his blazer. The pain was eating me up, my heart was thundering in my ear and my head was pounding. “I’m sorry… I promise it meant nothing, I love you Dahlia!” His voice came but it meant nothing. The damage was done. I stepped back feeling suddenly broken. My entire body trembled but I kept my gaze steady as I looked at him. “I want a divorce and I want you out of here. You’re fired.” I said in a hushed whisper as I backed away from him. His eyes widened in shock as the reality of those words hit him. Turning I left the office, Warren hot on my heels. “Dahlia darling! Please don’t do this! I’m sorry!” He pleaded, falling to his knees as he wrapped his arms around my legs. “Let go of me Warren!” I snapped; I could see other people coming out of their offices to witness the embarrassing scene. I didn’t want the entire office to know, but Kendra wasn’t far off crying loudly, as if she were the victim. What hurt the most was there had been red flags over the last few months. He was busier, often saying he had to stay at work overnight because he was so busy. I had come to work a few times only for him to look a bit alarmed and flustered but I never thought he would cheat on me. He had been the one to chase me, claiming to love me. I refused to let the tears fall. “Let go of me, Warren.” I warned my voice shaking. “Or shall I call security?”“Please my love, forgive me, it was a mistake. I promise you are all that I need. I will do anything.” Warren pleaded. I pushed him off me. “Anything?! Then get out of my sight forever. Do you really think you can make a fool out of me, and I will simply forgive you?” I said angrily. “No Dahlia I need you, I need this.” I didn’t miss his glance around the room, only resulting in causing me more pain. It was the wealth and power he truly wanted. “Maybe but I am an El Nazari, the princess of this empire and the sole heir. I do not need you, Warren Murdock. You are the one who needed me!” I hissed, stepping away from his grovelling touch. “You’re fired, this company no longer needs you.” We had an audience, everyone watched the drama ensuing. He had mocked me and humiliated me in front of everyone, there was no way I would forgive him. “Think of your reputation Dahlia! Think of this company!” Warren shouted from behind me as I rushed towards the lifts. Feeling relieved when one pinged and the doors opened. I hurried forward only to knock into the well-built man who had stepped out, my heart skipped a beat, gasping when I almost fell. A strong arm wrapped around my waist steadying me and I clutched onto the shirt of my saviour. A seductive scent filled my nose and I slowly looked up into the eyes of my rescuer. My eyes locked with the most smouldering hazel eyes I had ever seen. They were sharp, intelligent and there was something else present within them that I couldn't make out. “Dahlia!” Warren shouted, drawing me out of my thoughts. I didn’t want to talk to him. I wanted to hurt him as he hurt me. On impulse, wanting to release some of my anger, I pulled the man closer and before he could even realize what was happening, I kissed him passionately. My plump trembling lips meeting his soft ones. His minty breath and the heat he radiated made me confused as I felt an odd emotion settling in the pit of my stomach, my lips tingle softly and I gasped when I thought I felt his lips caress mine but I wasn’t sure as he pulled away quickly, glaring at me. My heart thudded as I tried to focus on what was happening. Taking a deep breath, I turned and glared at my ex-husband because that was what he was from this day forth. Not missing the man behind me muttering something under his breath. Warren stood there looking as if I had been the one to betray him. He rushed forward, trying to grab my hands. “Dahlia baby I know you’re upset but please, please give me a chance to prove myself!” He pleaded. “You need me! I'm the CEO you can’t simply-”“I have a new CEO don’t worry.” I said icily, a cold smirk now crossed my face. I turned to the man I had just kissed, taking in the smartly tailored suit he wore and the briefcase he was carrying. “Dane Altaire, I presume?”“Yes…” Came his low gravelly voice. Those haze orbs holding no emotion as he looked me straight in the eyes. “Congratulations Mr. Altaire you are now the new CEO of The El Nazari Empire!” My melodic voice was loud and clear, I knew everyone could hear me. Gasps followed as everyone watched and stared at us. Defeat and shock were clear on Warren's face, and a deep frown settled on Dane’s. I simply smiled in triumph. I was the boss here. It was high time everyone remembered that. ----- It was two nights since Warren had betrayed me and I had no idea how I had ended up here. In this club. I had come with a friend, one who had abandoned me the moment we were inside. She had said it would be a small masquerade party. Yes, I had fallen for it. I sighed as I looked out from behind my black lace mask that covered half my face, I now realised this club seemed to be a lot more than it let on… I didn’t miss the couples who left the dance floor to retreat to private rooms. My hair was pulled back in a bun. I wore a red strapless mini dress and long black gloves and knee-high boots. Not to mention that I had put in brown contacts to disguise myself even more. Now that I am here, I guess I could enjoy a drink or two. With that thought in mind, I made my way over to the bar. Thirty minutes later, I walked through the red haze of lights and smoke as the music became a steady rhythm and I began swaying my body to the music. Closing my eyes, I began moving sensually to the music. For a moment, forgetting everything that had occurred. I opened my eyes, feeling watched, and turned, finding a man sitting in a booth observing me intently. I could tell from his body, that he was very fit. Dressed in black pants and a dark green shirt. From his posture, I could tell he oozed authority and arrogance. He wore a mask that covered his entire face, save his lips. He turned his attention to the man next to him, saying a few words before he stood up and walked over to me. One hand in his pocket, I saw a glint of silver around his neck. turning away as he approached. Why had I held his gaze for so long? "You’re pretty straightforward." I heard a deep voice whisper in my ear. My heart pounded in alarm, realising that he was closer than I thought. I stiffened as his hands ran up my waist. "Who told you to come over?" I whispered. He pressed a finger against my lips, his arm pressing against my breasts, my ass now brushing against his front. "Don’t speak unless I tell you to." He whispered huskily. I pouted. Who was he to tell me not to talk? His finger ran down my lips, before brushing down my neck, leaving a soft tingle in his wake making me close my eyes. "Let’s dance." He whispered, I closed my eyes. He was right. Who cared who he was… I just needed to forget... I knew Warren’s cheating hadn't really hit home yet… Closing my eyes, I lost myself in the music. Dancing against the man behind me. His hands roamed my body, teasingly stopping just below my breasts, but that didn’t stop him from grinding against my ass and I had to bite my lip to stop a moan from escaping me… I knew I had drank more than I should have. But tonight, I didn't care. He spun me around, his hands firmly on my hips as we danced sensually. Right now, I wasn’t Dahlia, I was a woman who could be whoever she wanted. I didn’t stop myself from running my hand down his abs, hooking my fingers into his belted pants as we danced sensually. I saw his arrogant smirk playing on his ‘oh so kissable lips.’ His fingers teased me just the way I had teased him. We danced for God knows how long, our eyes locked, and I felt a shiver of pleasure rush through me. He leaned closer and I found myself doing the same. Our noses brushed, and I felt my core throb in anticipation of this kiss, but suddenly his phone rang, and I felt him stiffen as if he had only just realised what he had been about to do. Instantly pulling away. I turned and our eyes met. In this dark haze, I wasn’t able to make out his eyes, but I knew I’d never see him again after tonight. I felt a connection with him, an attraction that was beyond words. How was that even possible? He gave me a small smirk, taking my chin and kissing my cheek. My eyes widened in surprise at his move, but before I could even say anything, he had turned and walked off. Who was that?
Chapter 3 3. A Deal
DAHLIA Two weeks had passed since the scandal had hit the Nazari Empire, the stocks had taken a blow when the world found out about the collapse of my marriage. I had applied for a divorce on the basis of infidelity. My failed marriage was plastered on the cover of every newspaper and business magazine, every assumption and every remark were only adding salt to the already deep wounds that Warren had left me with. But I was still trying to remain strong and composed. True to my words I had appointed Dane Altaire as CEO, although the official signing was to take place very soon. I was not going to move from my decision although the board of directors were trying to break my resolve at every meeting. On top of that my father had summoned me, he had been abroad on a holiday when everything had happened but had returned home swiftly when he realised what had occurred. My chauffeur Markus now drove through the gates of the huge Nazari estate, the place was larger than my own mansion which looked humble and modest in comparison. It had been an extra estate of my fathers he had given me when Warren and I got married. Just the thought of Warren made my chest tighten painfully. It was already hard enough explaining to Aria that the man she had started to call papa was not coming back. “Thank you, Markus, wait in the car. I won’t be too long.” I said once he opened the door for me. Under my flawless makeup and a faint smile, I hid all my pain. The eyes of the world were upon me. I could not afford to mess up. I was scared to face my father, after all, he approved of Warren greatly. But I had to face him sooner or later. The butler allowed me inside seconds after I did the bell, bowing deeply. “Welcome home Lady Dahlia.”“Thank you, Edward. It’s good to see you again.” I said politely before I made my way to the sitting room, taking a deep breath before entering. “Baba, how are you?” I said smiling as I walked over to my father who was sitting with his wife Amal. She was only a few years older than me and was my father’s 5th wife. My mother had been the first but she had died in strange circumstances when I was young. My father never liked to discuss it. “Daughter, finally you show up!” Hadid said standing up, he was quite an intimidating man in his late 60’s but he looked a lot younger than his years. He closed the gap between us and hugged me tightly, I closed my eyes just wanting to stay here forever. Protected in his embrace. “I do apologise Baba but as you know there was so much going on.” I said, greeting my stepmother with a few air kisses. “Hm, how about you tell me exactly what happened? I don’t think divorcing Warren was the correct thing to do Dahlia.” My father now said, looking at me seriously. “Baba, he cheated on me. I don’t need a man like him in my life!” I exclaimed, not missing the eye roll from my stepmother. “He is an excellent CEO, that you fired. Over something so small.” My father said gravely. “Baba, if he is so amazing why don’t you marry him!” I retorted, annoyed that he thought it was something so small. My words made my stepmother give me a rather dirty look. Father simply sighed as he looked at me, disapproval clear in his expression. I knew this wasn’t going to be easy. “He would keep the company at its strongest. You are a woman Dahlia, you need a strong man behind you,”“I don’t! Baba believe in me.” I said pleadingly. I needed something to keep me focused, something to hold on to so I didn’t drown in the pits of despair and sadness over my broken marriage. “Amal, tell the staff to bring us some refreshments.” Father said, clearly indicating he wished to be alone with me. “Of course.” Amal said, casting me a once over before she left the room. Father sighed, taking my slender hand in his large ones. “You know about my health Dahlia… I don’t know how long I have. I need you somewhere I know you will be taken care of. Once I'm gone, many snakes will want this company, to take that power for themselves. Warren is a man who has a strong influence in our society and in the business world.”“Baba! What about his cheating? He put me through something no woman should be put through. Do you think I should stand by and allow it?” I asked, hurt and angry despite the sadness that I felt at the reminder of my father’s illness. “It isn't something that is unheard of, it is common.” He said. I knew he too had been a part of many affairs in his lifetime, but I refused to let myself suffer like this. “This new CEO is as good, in fact he may be better than Warren. Just let me handle this baba please.” I said looking into my father's eyes. He shook his head, I knew he wouldn’t agree so easily. “I will give you 2 months Dahlia to prove that this new CEO can stand up to Warren's level. If he fails you will take Warren back, am I clear?” His voice was cold and curt, I knew he wouldn’t listen. I clenched my jaw but nodded. I would prove that I didn’t need Warren, that this company didn’t need him. Although the company would take a hit when the Murdock’s pulled their investment it was nothing in comparison to the Nazari influence. I didn’t stay for longer, feeling my father’s growing annoyance the darker his face became. It hurt that he didn’t seem to think much of what I have been through. I took my leave before Amal even returned with the refreshments. I had things to do, and tonight I had a dinner meeting with Dane Altaire to attend. If all went well, he would soon be the new CEO of the Nazari empire. ------ It was now evening and I was sitting in a private room of the very restaurant I had wanted to visit with Warren. I smoothed the skirt of my silk deep blue fitted dress that reached just above my knees. My mind drifted to the sweet moments of my marriage. So far, I had kept myself busy with work and had no time to wallow in self-pity. The interior of the room was romantic and elegant, decorated in shades of browns and gold. Soft Arabic music played in the background; it was the perfect place for a couple to come to. I leaned against the backrest of the curved velvet booth, losing myself in the music, the weight of my pain ever-growing. There was a light knock on the door before one of the waiters opened it and Dane walked in, looking rather handsome. He was dressed in black slacks and a black shirt that had a few buttons left open, revealing the necklaces that hung around his neck. He didn’t even spare me a look as he sat down, his muscles flexing with every move. I looked away quickly not wanting to be seen staring. The waiter poured us both a glass of wine from the bottle that stood in a bucket of ice and left the room. I had already placed the order when I had arrived, wanting to at least impress the young man. I wasn’t sure if anything would impress him. He now sat back, tilting his head as he looked at me, a cold gloomy expression on his arrogant face. “I already placed the order but if there’s anything you would like to add-”“No thanks.” He said icily, tossing the contract on the table. “I read the contract and there are a few things I want to be amended.” Well, it was clear he wanted to cut straight to business. “Oh? I thought it was rather fair. We made sure we paid handsomely. You will have your pension, insurance, healthcare all-” He cut me off again, his eyes flashing dangerously. “I don’t really care if you think it's fair. I said I want to change a few things.” He said arrogantly. I felt a stab of annoyance. What a jerk. Why did he hate me so much? But I needed him, so I simply pouted and nodded. He gave me a look before continuing. “I will have the final say when it comes to the way I work, even if the Nazari empire is huge. If I don’t think something is fitting, I will not pass it. If you step in and try to oppose me even once, I assure you I will leave.” He said, his hazel eyes piercing into mine. I didn’t miss the way he looked me over, contempt growing on his face. I frowned back at him. “Sometimes I do need to have a say in the company Mr. Altaire.” I said firmly. “I assure you I am a lot more suited for this job than you are. If you want me, Ms. El Nazari, you need to accept my condition. Stick to make up and dressing up, leave the work to me.” He said arrogantly. I pressed my lips together, annoyed. He wasn’t wrong, I did need him. Although it shocked me how he didn’t seem to care how important a person I was. I had done a little background check on him and knew he was from a working-class family, although there wasn’t much on his family, apart from the fact they owned a small diner downtown and that he was the eldest of three siblings. “I have also done my master’s in business Mr. Altaire, and I have years more experience than you.” I said in a clipped tone, sticking my nose up as I picked up my glass. “I completed at the top of my class in-”“I don’t really care.” He said, sounding bored. I frowned, I wasn’t wrong, he was 26 and I was 30 after all. “Well, you should! I’m older and wiser.” I retorted. I didn’t miss the flash of annoyance in his eyes as he leaned forward, making my eyes widen as I was forced to lean back. The same intoxicating scent that I smelt off him at the office filled my senses and I tried not to get lost in those eyes that were rimmed with the most perfect lashes one could ask for. “Listen to me princess, I don’t care how old you are. You’re the one who wants me, remember?” His low voice made my heart race and I simply nodded, wanting him to move away. I didn’t miss the way his eyes ran over my face, lingering on my lips before he frowned deeply and moved back. “Fine! How about this? Sometimes we will discuss things, but I will leave the majority to you.” I said frowning as I looked him square in the eyes. “Fine.” He said, frowning. Neither of us was completely satisfied. I smiled clinking my glass with his. “I look forward to it.” I replied, relieved we had come to an agreement. A small predator-like smirk crossed his face for a fraction of a second before he drank the wine…
Chapter 4 4. A Dinner Party
Dane Three Days had passed since my dinner with Dahlia, or should I say the spoilt princess. She was partially a mystery to me; at times she didn’t seem to care that her husband had cheated on her and then at other times I thought I saw the sadness behind those alluring grey eyes. I frowned, stopping my train of thought. She was nothing more to me than a stepping stool to get to where I wanted. I stepped out of the bedroom of my small apartment in the busy city, it wasn’t too big but it was well kept and decorated with a modern interior. I had only recently moved out of my family’s small apartment and if I was going to do this then I didn’t want to draw too much attention to who my parents were. Tonight was the party in my honour, celebrating my new status as CEO of the multi-billionaire company. I looked in the mirror, the suit I wore was well-tailored in a dark navy shade, underneath it I wore a red shirt, a few buttons left open showing off the three necklaces I always wore. I adjusted my suit jacket and looked at my reflection with sharp criticism. My hair was styled back sleekly in a quiff. No one would think I grew up in the most dangerous parts of the city. I glanced at my watch, it was time to go. Soon I’d have them all eating out of my hands, starting with the grey-eyed princess. I left my apartment locking up after me and headed down to my car. I drove towards the grand hotel that had been booked out for the event. It was one of the El Nazari’s own venues. Just then my phone rang, and I answered it hands-free. “Hello mom.” I said. “Dane… are you sure about this?” Her quiet voice came. I sighed, she needed to get that I wasn’t going to back out. Not when I had come so far. “Yes, and nothing you say will talk me out of this. It’s the only way to get answers mom… there’s more to it than we know… and I need to find out exactly what it was.” I said coldly, my voice dripping with venom. “I understand son, but I don’t want to lose someone else… not again.” Her whispery voice held fear, fear of a past that still haunted her. A frown crossed my face. “Mom history will not repeat itself, I know what I'm doing. Now please don’t bring this up again.” I said with finality, she sighed. “Ok son I love you. Be careful, no matter how innocent they may look they are not.” She said. “Hm, I know that mom.” I said before I ended the call. My mood now much darker than it was before… -------- Reaching the venue, a member of security opened my car door for me. I stepped out, slipping some shades on. Ignoring the flashing cameras or the reporters trying to ask me questions. I walked past them swiftly, an arrogance to my posture, and made my way inside. Reaching the hall all eyes turned to me. I knew what they were thinking, that someone like me who had no fancy background had made it to the position of CEO of one of the largest companies in the world. I had a certain princess to thank for that. I didn’t bother with any of the curious stares and motioned a waiter over, taking a glass of wine from his tray. The hall was lavishly decorated in a theme of red, black and gold. Soft classical music played in the background and the buzz of talking was a low hum beyond that. Scanning the room from behind my shades I saw most of the men who were our business rivals. Many who had tried to get me out of the picture when I came to the business world, and others who wanted me on their side. My intention wasn’t to take such a position, the plan was to work from the shadows and get the answers I seek. But why deny something when it would lead me to my ultimate goal? Something seemed to have caught everyone’s attention and I turned, following their gaze. Only to see the princess herself walk down the steps. She wore a strapless red gown that reached the floor, a slit from mid-thigh went all the way down, revealing her smooth leg. She was tall with all the curves one could wish for, I had to admit any man would desire her. Her long hair was now left open with only a small quiff at the top, I wonder if it's even her real hair. It reached her hips and was styled in loose curls. Her heart-shaped face with plump lips that were now coloured a deep red looked perfect, making me remember that kiss we shared. My frown deepened and I looked away from them. I wonder how long it took her to practice that enticing walk, her hips swayed with every step, yet it wasn’t forced and was as natural as the faint smile that graced her beautiful face. I had to admit she looked breath-taking. I wondered why her husband had even cheated on her, perhaps she was a prude in bed? I smirked at this thought, it would kind of fit, no one wants a boring woman. I now removed my shades, tucking them into the front of my shirt. An older man I knew to be the Hadid El Nazari, the billionaire himself, took her hand and she met him with a kiss on the cheek. I hated rich women, spoilt, arrogant and stupid. I wasn’t happy I was going to have to put up with her now that I was practically working for her. That was another thing I disliked. I never planned to work for anyone for long… I’ve always wanted my own company. Maybe someday. Speaking of the lady in red, she was making her way over to me with her father and another young woman. “Baba, meet Dane Altaire, our new CEO.” She said, smiling at me as she held her hand out. I took it, giving it a quick shake before letting go. Knowing that many people were watching us I couldn't ignore it. I then turned to the man I realised he was a little taller than me, but that didn’t stop me from exuding power. It was rather comical actually; the man was a billionaire but to me, he was just scum. “Hmm. I hope my daughter has not made the wrong mistake in appointing you, I look forward to seeing what you do for this company.” He said, his sharp grey eyes boring into mine. Oh, she had definitely made a mistake… “Only time will tell.” I said arrogantly. Hadid simply frowned and introduced the woman next to him. “My wife Amal.” He said. Amal gave me an obvious attempt at a coquettish smile, one she had mastered but I wasn’t really interested in trash. “It’s lovely to meet you Mr. Altaire. I hope we get to see you more often as we do business with you.” She said, her eyes trailing over me. I frowned, rich women were indeed of loose morals. “I will leave you two to mingle, I am retired in a way.” Hadid said, Dahlia gave her father a nod before the couple walked off. “Shall we dance Amal?” I heard him ask his wife. The tinkling laughter from Amal was enough to take as a yes, she cast one last look towards Dahlia and me, I didn’t miss the look of jealousy that flickered in her eyes. I couldn't wait for today to be over. “Would you like a drink?” Dahlia’s soft melodic voice came. “Are you blind Ms. El Nazari, or are you simply dumb? What does this look like?” I said mockingly, holding up my glass, not missing how she tried not to frown at me. “I was being polite Mr. Altaire. Well then, let's go meet the board of directors.” She offered, turning to scan the crowd. The glittering strings of pearls across the back of her dress caught my attention, teasing her smooth skin that was all on show right down to her lower back. I looked away frowning, not wanting to get distracted. Women were nothing but trouble. “They can come to me, Ms. El Nazari.” I said. She sighed looking at me with those large doe eyes. She wasn’t innocent and I knew I was grating away her patience, it was rather fun to push her buttons and I could see she was getting annoyed as she struggled to remain calm. How long would her façade last? About to say something, the sudden sound of shattering glass filled the room making us both turn - seeing a very drunk and angry-looking Warren surrounded by broken glass and spilt wine, his burning glare trained upon the woman next to me…
Chapter 5 5. Scandals & Lies
DAHLIA My heart thumped in my chest, which rose and fell erratically. Stepping back I looked at the clearly drunk and dishevelled Warren. It was the first time I was seeing him since that day and although I had invited him to show him that I didn’t need him, I did not expect him to be in such a state. “Dahlia! So is this the bastard who you left me for?” He spat coldly as he staggered towards me. “Security!” I heard father thunder. Warren was ruining their relationship as much as he was his own. Warren glared at me; I could see the anger he felt as he looked me over. He had spent the last 2 weeks pleading, begging and promising to do better through texts, emails and every other way possible. I refused to listen. Once a cheater, always a cheater. The only interaction from my side had been when I sent him the divorce papers. Papers he would never sign without a fight. “Mark my words! I will destroy the both of you!” He hissed, keeping his voice low as he advanced. Dane stepped forward, placing an arm in front of me. He moved me behind him, making my eyes widen. “I knew you were a loser from the start, but if you’re trying to bully a woman then you're worse than I thought.” He said icily, my heart raced as I looked at his broad back. No matter how arrogant he was, he had some compassion. “I’ll show you who a loser is, just you wait.” Warren said dangerously as a few security guards reached him, pulling Warren away from them. “Dahlia is the one who was having an affair! Not me!” He shouted to the now quiet room. I gasped in shock; how dare he accuse me when I was not the one who had destroyed this marriage! “Everyone saw her in the office kissing him!” He shouted before he was dragged from the room. I remained still, knowing my face had lost a lot of its colour My heart was pounding from what had just happened. Just then two men from the company board of directors hurried over. Both were strong supporters of Warren and didn’t really approve of Dane. “Is this true Ms. El Nazari?” Mr. Jameson said, he was a rather short man with a bushy moustache. “I did hear the rumours.” Mr. Arash said, his dark eyes glaring accusingly at me. “No… it wasn’t like-” I tried. “Did you kiss him?” Mr. Jameson cut in. “She did.” Dane said coldly, his hazel eyes filled with anger and for once I was glad there was someone who didn’t care about being liked. “It was one kiss out of anger, there is nothing between us. Whilst Murdock has been engaging with his secretary in more than just kissing and yet you think Ms. El Nazari is in the wrong here? Why, because she’s a woman? Let me get one thing clear. I’m the CEO now, and I demand respect. Remember who you’re speaking to, the acting head and the CEO. One more word against her and you can leave the same way that piece of trash just left.” The two men were struck silent, never had they expected Dane to speak so disrespectfully towards them. I was as shocked as them, but a part of me felt proud of the fact that Dane wasn’t pretending to be anyone for anyone's sake. “You will regret your words boy.” Mr. Arash hissed before they walked off. The crowd was slowly beginning to disperse and the hum of conversation started once again. I could see my father watching us and I knew he was curious about the kiss. I didn’t want to talk about that now. I gave a small smile, showing him I was alright but I was shaken. Warren's words and the scene he had caused had left me hurt. I was beginning to feel as if I had control but once again it was spiralling out of it. I looked at the finger where my wedding ring once sat and felt a pang of pain. Stay strong, I told myself. “Thank you.” I said quietly to Dane, looking up at him. His face was once again unreadable. “Don’t thank me, just stop going around kissing random men.” He said in his low deep voice, his gaze flickering to my lips before his eyes met mine and my heart skipped a beat remembering that kiss. His lips had been as warm as his personality was cold. He looked away first, breaking our trance and I was glad. He downed his alcohol. “Well then… should we meet the rest of the assholes?” He said, making my eyes widen as he referred to the Company Board of Directors so disrespectfully. “Uh yes…. let’s…” I said, taking a breath as I led the way, suddenly feeling very self-conscious that my back was fully on display. ----- The evening had gone by in a blur. I remained strong although I heard the whispers that crossed through the room like a passing breeze. Some snippets sometimes caught my ear, and at other times I tried to not even hear them. I spent the night stuck by Dane's side, introducing him to everyone. I learned aside from being devilishly handsome and arrogant, he knew what he was doing when it came to business. He was smart, witty and confident. Which only made me increasingly satisfied with my choice and it was enough to outweigh the negative comments that swirled the hall tonight. My father had looked rather tired and had left shortly after dinner. I knew his health was only getting worse and it scared me too. The party was now almost over and I decided to take my leave too. I felt tired from all that walking and talking, and I knew Aria would be waiting for me when I got home. The few dances I had agreed to from the elderly gentlemen who tried to cheer me up had worn me out. I had refused all the young vultures who now saw me as a piece of meat to dig their claws into. I stepped out into the cool air, two bodyguards accompanying me when the blinding flash of cameras went off making me stop in my tracks. “Is it true Dahlia?! You’re the one who cheated on Warren Murdock?!”“Dahlia, is it true you’re having an affair with the new CEO?!”“Was this all your plan to oust Warren to make space for your new lover!?” The shouting made my already pounding head worsen. I hadn't drunk much but the pressure of the night had built and I felt overwhelmed. “Please give us space.” One of my bodyguards said firmly. However no one listened, the cameras flashed blindingly surrounding me. Suddenly I felt vulnerable, how easy was it to make the woman look like the one in the wrong? Why was I the one who was being portrayed as the villain? The reporters didn’t relent, pushing closer. A few other security guards hurried out to assist us. I was trying to keep up my mask of calmness, but it was getting harder. Even when the first drops of rain began to fall I didn’t notice, only the hurtful comments and accusations echoed through my mind like a never-ending recorder on repeat. “Dahlia! Tell us how many men you have been with behind your husband's back?!” The last comment made me snap back to reality and I glared at the reporters. “None!” I said, but my voice was drowned out by all those around me. They didn’t want to listen. The rain began pouring down, only adding to the chaos. Suddenly a hand appeared on my back making me tense and turned to see none other than Dane, his shades were back on making it even harder for me to read his emotions. “Walk.” He said firmly, guiding me through the crowds, the security was doing its best to keep the angry crowd back. Markus was already waiting by the car but it was completely surrounded. “I’ll drop you.” I looked up at Dane, surprised that he even offered. He guided her over to the valet, who was standing next to a sleek yet modest black car. The reporters were so hyped about stopping me from leaving they didn’t even notice the other car present. Dane grabbed the keys from the valet and we both got in quickly. We were already turning to leave before the reporters realised what was happening. “She’s getting away!” I closed my eyes leaning against the leather seat, placing a hand on my chest. “Address.” Dane said curtly. I gave my address keeping my eyes closed, my heart hammering in my chest. I didn’t have the energy to open my eyes, I could feel his eyes on me at times but I was grateful he didn’t say anything. Only when we slowed down at the mansion and the security let us through the gate did I open my eyes. I turned to Dane as he slowed down, stopping outside the steps that led up to the mansion entrance. “Thank you.” I said softly, not knowing what else to say. I shivered looking up at the night sky, the rain was pouring down in buckets now and I realised we were both rather wet. Dane took his jacket off and held it out to me not even glancing at me. A frown on his handsome face. I took it, my fingers brushing his making me slowly look up at him, the next words left my lips before I could even stop them. “Would you like to come inside for a coffee?” I asked softly.
Chapter 6 6. Over A Cup Of Coffee
DANE “Would you like to come inside for a coffee?” I looked at her, trying not to look at the way water trickled down her collar bones and into her cleavage. This was not a good idea… I glanced at the mansion hesitating. Should I agree? “Sure, I guess I could use a hot drink.” I said quietly, not missing her eyes widened in surprise. I raised an eyebrow. “Why ask if you didn’t want me to agree?” I asked. She shook her head vigorously, a tendril of hair falling in front of her face. My fingers itched to brush it aside. “No, no that’s not it. I owe you, come on in.” She said getting out of the car as she hurried to the door, my jacket around her shoulders. She reached inside her purse and took her keys out. Unlocking the door, she stepped aside allowing me to pass. I looked around the entrance hall that was dimly lit by the rectangular wall lamps that glowed warmly spread across the soft brown panelled walls. The floor was marble and the centre lights that hung in large white orbs on the ceiling were turned off. Several doors led off from it and a large staircase led upstairs. I could see a glass balcony from the second floor too. She closed the door behind us and looked at me. “Everyone’s turned in for the night. Come, I’ll get you some dry clothes.” She said now looking me over before she looked away quickly. I didn’t bother replying as I followed her up the stairs. Our footsteps echoing in the silent halls. She seemed to hesitate when we reached the landing before she turned to the right and opened the door. Switching the light on. “I’ll be right back with some dry clothes.” She said, leaving me in what looked to be a spare bedroom. In this state, I was going to ruin the carpet. I kicked off my shoes, peeling off my socks and walked over to the bed and began to empty my pockets. I unbuttoned my shirt and had just taken it off when I heard the door open. Had she not heard of knocking? I turned to see her smoothing out some clothes she was holding along with a towel. She no longer had my jacket around her. “Your build is bigger than Warren’s but I think these will fit you, I've bought some brand new boxers-“ She gasped when she looked up. Her eyes went impossibly wider as her gaze fell to my bare torso. It was almost amusing to see her blush, averting her gaze before she quickly moved to my left and placed the clothes down. “I uh… Sorry I didn’t realise you weren’t dressed!” She said. “What’s the matter? Never seen a shirtless man before?” I asked, picking up the t-shirt she had brought. “At least wait for me to leave!” She snapped. Now glaring at me as she turned, stepping backwards as if to avoid making skin contact with me - Only to stumble on the hem of her dress, yelping. I raised my eyebrow grabbing her by the elbow at an awkward angle, making the both of us tumble onto the bed. A scream left her lips as my face hit her soft pillows, her delicious scent hitting my nose and her heart beating erratically. I froze when I realised exactly where my head was. I pulled back; my eyes widened in shock as I looked down at the woman who was beneath me. Her gorgeous eyes were wide with shock, her cheeks dusted in a dark pink blush but what caught my attention was the way her breasts that had cushioned me moments earlier were rising and falling rapidly. I quickly got off her, running my hand through my hair, composing myself. “If you can’t walk in them, don’t wear them.” I said curtly glancing at her heels, trying not to look at the smooth skin of her leg as she sat up slowly. “Sorry…” She said quietly. I didn’t reply, picking up the clothes she had bought me and looked around realising there was another door in the room. Hoping it was a bathroom I walked through slamming the door behind me. I towel dried my hair before I changed swiftly. Pulling on the clothes hoping she was gone from the room. I gave it a few extra moments trying not to think about her on that bed… Her arms by the side of her head, the curves of her breasts emphasised even if her dress wasn’t low… I frowned. I am not going to think of her like that. I re-entered the bedroom frowning at the empty room. Picking up my stuff, shoving them into my pockets before I grabbed my wet clothes and walked over to my shoes. Pausing when I realised she had removed the wet socks I had dropped and left a new pair. I frowned, not knowing what to make of it. Wasn’t she a dumb spoilt princess who had people to serve her? Squashing the thought, I left the room with my clothes in hand. Just as I saw Dahlia stepping out of a room a little down. Dressed in a long-sleeved fitted white top and floral leggings that showed off her long toned legs. She wore slippers but the most shocking thing was her makeup-free face. She was a natural beauty… her cheeks flushed under my gaze, and I had a feeling she wasn’t over the moment from earlier. “The clothes fitted well…” She said hurrying over and taking the wet ones from me. “I’ll have these washed for you, it’s the least I can do for dropping me home. Come let’s have something to drink.” She didn’t even give me a chance to reply as she led the way down the stairs. That sway was still present in her hips, and I didn’t even realise I had tilted my head watching her perky behind until she turned and walked off to the left. We entered a large kitchen, decorated in all cream. The cabinets were glossy and the marble worktop had flecks of gold in it. The bright spotlights were warm. One entire wall was complete windows. The middle being doors that led to the garden. “Take a seat.” She said to me, motioning to one of the stools as she walked over to the coffee machine. “Hot chocolate? Coffee, latte, tea?”“Latte’s fine.” I said, looking anywhere but at her, this felt too intimate. Just as the machine was started up I heard the sound of footsteps, and the door was pushed open. A little girl in pink unicorn pyjamas stood there. She looked to be around 6 or 7. Her chocolate-coloured hair fell messily around her shoulders, and she was rubbing her eyes. “Mama?” She said. Dahlia turned; a smile I had never seen before lit up her face making my breath hitch. It wasn’t the polite faint smile I saw so often. This one held happiness. She rushed over to the little girl, crouching down in front of her and brushed her hair back. “Ari, are you ok? Did mama disturb you?” She asked in a soft voice. I frowned. I didn’t know she had a daughter. The girl looked nothing like Dahlia or even Warren. I had done my research on her beforehand. She and Warren had dated and then married a little under a year ago… there was no mention of a child… “No mama I missed you.” She said, hugging Dahlia tightly. Before her eyes met mine, they grew large as curiosity shone through. “Who's that mama?”“That’s… Mr Altaire. He dropped me home from the party and I invited him in for a drink. Would you like a milkshake or hot chocolate?”“Can I have a milkshake please?” Dahlia bought her over and lifted her into the seat next to me. I saw her look between me and her daughter for a moment, an emotion I couldn't make out flickered in her eyes before she turned to the child. “Aria, say hello.”“Hi Mr Altaire.” The child said, holding her hand out. I gave her a small smile, I had to admit the girl was adorable. “Hey Aria, you’re a cutie, right?” I said, she blushed shyly and nodded. “Mama always says so.” She said as Dahlia left us and went to continue with the drinks. “Well, I guess this time your mama’s right.” I said, I didn’t really care much for kids or even considered having them myself, so I was quite surprised I was even talking to a child. Dahlia returned with two mugs and a glass of strawberry milkshake. She placed them in front of us before taking a seat on the other stool next to Aria. “Daddy never comes to the kitchen. He says it isn’t proper.” Aria said, I didn’t miss the flicker of sadness that washed over Dahlia’s face. For a moment I wondered if she really wasn’t to blame but then again, I doubted it wasn’t a two-way thing. The elite always had inner conflict. Playing games was their favourite pastime. “Mr, do you know when daddy will come home? He’s gone on a trip.” The child continued, as I downed my drink. I needed to get out of here. This all felt too… intimate. I ruffled her soft hair. “Your dad will come home when the time's right. I mean surely he will miss an angel like you right?” I said surprised the frown on my face didn’t deter her as she giggled. “I’m no angel.” She whispered before looking towards Dahlia and giggling. The woman smiled at her as she cupped her own mug, barely having had a sip. I stood up. “Well, thanks for the drink. I’ll see you at work.” I said curtly not even looking at Dahlia. “Of course, see you at work.” She said, getting up and following me out to the door. I didn’t bother slowing down as I pulled open the front door. “Thank you.” It was the last thing I heard from her before I walked over to my car. Pausing when something to the far right caught my eyes and I looked at the fountain. The stone base was a mermaid with the water pouring from her hands. Why did it look so familiar? I pushed the thought away and got into my car. Glancing towards the door I saw she was still standing there. I looked away, a deep unsettling feeling in the pit of my stomach. The mermaid fountain also niggled at the back of my mind as if I was forgetting something very vital…
Chapter 7 7. A Bad Start To The Day
DAHLIA The following morning dawned rather cold; I was sitting in the car with Aria. We would drop her at school before I headed to work. When Warren was around, he forced me to stay home from work more often than not. At the time I didn’t mind, loving to spend more time with Aria. Ever since baba became ill, I had worked a lot more. I wondered if Warren's reason was so he could mess around at work. Were there other women at work he had been sleeping with? Just the thought sent a pang of pain through me. I was annoyed at the same time. I sighed until I felt someone watching me and looked at Aria who was watching me thoughtfully. “Is everything ok darling?” I asked her, caressing her hair that was in two pigtails. “Is mama sad because daddy left us?” She said. I froze, my smile vanishing. “Who said daddy left us?”“Kids at school, and Mrs Riddle was telling the other teacher…” Aria mumbled. I frowned, feeling anger spike inside. Oh, this was not going to be forgotten. How dare they talk in front of a child like that?! “Is it because of me?” Those words hurt me, and I pulled the child into my lap. “No Ari, never think that. This is not happening because of you. Mama and daddy had an argument. Nothing more.” I kissed her forehead, hugging her tightly. I wasn’t going to let this slide. Telling Markus to wait whilst I drop Aria to her class before I asked her teacher to step outside for a word. The woman smiled sweetly, closing the classroom door leaving the children with the assistant teacher. I gave a small faint smile. “Mrs Riddle. I understand that it is part of human nature to gossip, and I really don’t care if you say whatever you wish about me, but do not make the mistake of speaking in front of my child.” I said coldly. Satisfied when her face drained of colour. “Oh, Ms El Nazari it isn't like that. I have no idea what you are talking about!” She lied blatantly. I raised an eyebrow. “Oh really? Is that why Aria asked me exactly why we are separated?”“I… well I-”“Enough.” I said icily “This will be the first and last time I allow you to get away with it. If I hear anything or learn my daughter is treated differently after this, I assure you I will take this to the head. Don’t forget the El Nazari Company is what funds half of the extracurricular activities in this school.” Mrs Riddle nodded, visibly trembling. “I-I’m sorry. It will not happen again.”“I should hope not.” I said before turning on my heels and walking off. I didn’t like to boast of my influence but when it came to Aria, I became dangerously protective. She was my life and sometimes it scared me that others would realise that. ------ I reached the office building hurrying through the halls. I had almost forgotten about the meeting! Today was the first meeting with the new CEO. I can’t believe I'm late for this! I slowed down reaching the doors and walked inside trying to keep my breathing steady. My heart thudded as I saw everyone was already seated. All eyes now turned to me. I saw Dane raise his eyebrow, that arrogant look on his handsome face as he sat at the top right side of the table. I walked around taking my seat at the head. Not looking at Dane who was right next to me, arms crossed as if waiting for an explanation. “Did you forget about the meeting Ms El Nazari?” He asked, his gravelly voice laced with mockery. I frowned slightly as I looked at him. “There’s nothing wrong with having to wait for the head of the company Mr Altaire.” I replied airily. He frowned looking away. “Let’s carry on, I have things to do.” He spoke looking back at the screen. “As I was saying before we were interrupted-”“You started without me?” I said, my eyes widening. The board of directors exchanged looks but right now I didn’t care. I was already in a mood thanks to Aria’s teachers. As if the news articles and magazines were not enough! “You're 20 minutes late Ms El Nazari. Time is money and my job is to take this company to new heights is it not? Or did you expect me to wait around?” He said, raising one of his irritatingly perfect eyebrows. I could see the board nodding their agreement. So, I said nothing, despite the anger that was seething through me. “Then do continue.” I said. He smirked, turning his gaze back to the projector that was showing some stats. “Now that I have permission to continue, as I was saying. In the last year, I’ve noticed that the companies’ expenses have risen more than the market inflation rate.” I frowned looking ahead. How did I not know about this? “We didn’t know… Mr Murdock never mentioned-” Mr Kim said. “Because you’re still making profits no one cares until you start losing out. If these expenses were tracked, you’d learn half of them were very unnecessary. I’ve only had a day since I've been in the office, so I thought I’d do a bit of a background check to see where we’re standing. “So, what do you advise?” Mr Arden said gravely. He was one of Dahlia’s favourites on the board. “If the board agrees. I want a week to have every department’s finances checked and make amendments to those figures.” His face was serious. He was leaning back in his seat, his eyes on the screen, his leg resting on his other knee. His elbow resting on the armrest. Relaxed, yet he exuded power and arrogance. I felt my heart hammer when he suddenly turned as if sensing me watching him, but said nothing looking away as the board members discussed between themselves. After a few moments, most of them nodded. “That makes complete sense. We do hope you don’t disappoint us, Mr Altaire.” Mrs Smith said. “I won't.” He said, turning to me. “Want to add anything Ms El Nazari?”“No. That’s fair.” I said quietly despite hearing the antagonising tone in his voice. He smirked and turned back, continuing with the meeting. Almost two hours later the meeting was over and my butt was hurting from all the sitting. One thing that was crystal clear was Dane knew exactly what he was doing. I was rather impressed considering he was only a year out of his education. I knew he had worked in several companies whilst studying and on many projects but seeing him like this… The meeting was finally over, and everyone left. Only Dane and I were left. He was going through some files on his laptop. The projector was now turned off. “That was impressive.” I said after a moment. “I haven't done anything yet.” He said, his hands working on his laptop at a very fast speed. “But there is something I wanted to show you, which didn’t need to be mentioned to the board.”“Hmm?” I said standing up. I walked around and leaned down looking at the screen he shifted towards me a little. “There are thousands that have been sent to several different accounts. Not anything noticeable from such a huge company considering the size. However, I thought you might want to know. It seems your fiancé was sending extra bonuses to several women in this very building.” I felt as if I had been slapped, my heart tightening and my eyes stinging as I stared at the screen. Names I recognised and who worked in this very company and there were two that stuck out the most. Kendra Johnson and Menhal Mir- my stepmothers sister. “Fire them all. Immediately.” I said, my voice so cold I barely recognised it myself. Anger burned through me like a raging storm and the only way that I would be satiated was to get rid of every single woman who dared to mock me by affiliating themselves with my husband.
