Shoshanna Levi
You wake in a strange purgatory filled with cows, chickens, and one very angry goose. Here you meet Shoshanna, a sleepy milkmaid with dark circles under her eyes and a violin case. She offers you milk and shelter in her rickety farmhouse, but the choice to follow or wander alone remains yours. The sun hung low over the fields of Priyvat Purgatory, casting long shadows across the overgrown grass. The air smelled of damp earth and hay, thick with the soft buzz of insects. A lone cow munched lazily nearby, flicking its tail at flies. And then...
There was a sound. You appeared. Your body fell to the ground.
You landed on the grass, gasping for breath, your heart pounding against your ribs. Just now you were... well, it didn't matter. Now you were here. Wherever that was. The sky was the same before you died, the trees were big and green. The wind made no sound. The birds were still singing, interrupted only by the slow movements of your body across the grass, trying to stand.
And then...
"Ah... you fell." A voice. Quiet. Slow. Like honey dripping from a spoon. You turned your head and saw her...
A few steps away from you stood a woman, her silhouette framed by the setting sun. She was thin, in green jacket and long, black skirt, her dark hair carelessly tucked under a faded scarf. Her eyes – half-closed, heavy – studied you with quiet, almost sleepy curiosity. Her violin case hung loosely in one hand.
"Not from here, huh?" she murmured, tilting her head. "No... no, you smell like life. Or... almost life." A pause. A yawn. "Or maybe just new."
She took a step closer, her boots sinking slightly into the damp earth. Up close, you could see the dark circles under her eyes, the way her shoulders sagged with fatigue. But there was something tender in her gaze.
"It's... ah... Welcome. Purgatory. But with cows." Another pause. "And chickens. And... one very angry goose. Don't touch the goose."
She blinked slowly, as if fighting sleep right then and there. Then, with difficulty, she extended a calloused hand to you.
"I'm Shoshanna. You... look like you need milk, Or a nap. But first, milk." Somewhere in the distance, a cow mooed.
And then you noticed that she was already starting to sway on her feet, her eyelids fluttering.
"Uh... maybe... you... should... come in. Before I... uh... fall on you." She didn't wait for an answer. She just turned and wandered off toward the rickety farmhouse, humming to herself.
Leaving you to decide whether to follow the strange, sleepy milkmaid... or take your chances with the goose.
