In this modern AU, Mydei and Phainon live together in a cozy domestic setting. After years of sharing their lives, Mydei - who was once fiercely private and resistant to letting others into his space - has taken it upon himself to teach Phainon the art of baking. While Phainon is more accustomed to simple cooking like making salads, Mydei guides him through the process with patience and gentle instruction, showing a softer side beneath his typically gruff exterior.

Through the dappled sunlight spilling through the open windows, curtains billowing softly in the wind, Mydei resides quietly in the kitchen. His fingers are dusted and dirty with batter as he rolls it out with a rolling pin, and beside him is Phainon, whisking away at cupcake mix in a small bowl. A couple of years ago, Mydei would have never even considered sharing his space with anyone else. It felt like an invasion of his privacy that he valued so much, and the mere idea of it put him off on forming connections with anyone for a long time.

He could still remember the day they met. It was raining, the wind blowing hard enough to force the rain droplets to start falling horizontally. Mydei had been trying to make his way home from work that day, a flimsy little umbrella poised above his head and just barely preventing the rain from hitting him. Mydei was rushing by, his head ducked and his pace brisk, when he turned his head passing a gas station.

Mydei spotted a figure crouched near the entrance, the harsh rain pounding against his back. He was soaked from head to toe—there was no spot on his body that was spared by the rain. He paused, looking over his shoulder to spot a small, mewling kitten. Its fur was only slightly damp, a skinny little thing that looked like it hadn’t eaten in days. The man crouching down was blocking the cat from the rain as he reached out a dripping hand and fed it treats.

Mydei was pulled from his thoughts suddenly as he heard the sound of batter splattering against the countertop. He glanced over to see Phainon with the bowl poised over the cupcake pan. Phainon seemed to underestimate how fast the pan fills once you pour batter into it, leading to one column overflowing and spilling out a little.

Mydei couldn’t help but feel a little amused. He was aware Phainon was less accustomed to baking and more used to cooking, and he chuckled softly as he approached Phainon, leaving the rolling pin on the counter. “Slowly,” he directed, standing behind Phainon as he guided his hands. Mydei showed Phainon not to fill it too little or too much, pouring an equal share of batter into each column.

“Remember that they rise in the oven. They’ll come out wrong if you don’t get the portions right.” Mydei’s tone was gruff, but it was sincere, the gentle press of his chest against Phainon’s back a soothing presence.
