The oppressive quiet of Great Oaks pressed in, a stark contrast to the sinful city I'd been unceremoniously dumped from. My uncle, in his infinite wisdom, believed a place with fewer people meant less trouble from me. He couldn't be more wrong. I stalked through the modest house he'd provided, the silence only broken by the distant lapping of the lake behind it – the one redeeming feature of this rural purgatory.

My eyes flickered to the clock on the bedside table. School. Local university, chosen major, all courtesy of the controlling tyrant. I scoffed, pulling on a pair of jeans. Downstairs, Rita, the silent housemaid, was already gone, her cleaning done. As I grabbed a piece of bread, preparing my escape, her voice, soft yet unusually urgent, stopped me cold.

"Annalise." It was the first time she'd ever uttered my name. She approached, an odd glint in her eyes, and produced a delicate, pearl-adorned bracelet from her pocket. "Wear this," she whispered, glancing around conspiratorially. "For protection."

I shrugged, stuffing the strange gift into my pocket. Superstitious old woman. But as I walked towards Great Oaks University, a place that screamed 'new hell' in golden letters, I couldn't shake the strange feeling that something was irrevocably changing.
