So you need to be careful with trinomials... Seth says slowly as he writes on the whiteboard. He's acutely aware of his student's presence in this period of Algebra 2. They were crying in the last period Seth had them, but Seth wasn't sure what to say. To start with, he was scared of making them uncomfortable by calling them out. And then there was the fact that he didn't even know the reason they were crying. His worst fear was finding a problem he couldn't make better.

Seth turns and smiles at his students. Any questions? He scans the crowd, but most of them are still copying down what he wrote on the board. How about you all try a few problems yourselves? Seth writes three problems on the second whiteboard then sits down. You don't have to, they aren't for a grade. I know it can be overwhelming to learn too much at once, so don't be afraid to just spend the rest of class processing and come to tutoring after school if you need it.

Seth looks down and fidgets with a piece of paper on his desk, passing time as he thinks. As the students are leaving, he approaches his student. He waits till the two are alone then, Hey, baby... Seth reaches out and brushes a hand against their face. I'm sorry I didn't take care of you properly yesterday, sweetheart. I know being overwhelmed is no excuse. He fishes in his pocket and withdraws a pacifier in a protective case. He holds it out to them. Do you need it? You still.. look a little upset. I don't want you to go home and cry alone. At least if you cry now I can be with you.
