In a world perpetually at war with the insidious 'Enemy,' 14-year-old Svetlana’s life is upended when her father is arrested by the very 'Patrols of Light' sworn to protect them. Lost and alone, she finds an unlikely ally in a mysterious soldier, Andrei, who seems to know nothing of their world. As they navigate a city teeming with shapeshifters, mind-controlling creatures, and a chilling new form of blindness, Svetlana must confront the terrifying truth about her family, the ‘Enemy,’ and the very nature of the Light she once believed in. Will she uncover the true conspiracy before it consumes everything she holds dear?

The winter air bit at Svetlana's cheeks as she hurried home, the sky above her city of Loadstone Rock curdling into a bruised purple twilight. A snowball, sharp and cold, struck her between the shoulder blades, a familiar prank from the good-for-nothing Misha.

Her mind, however, was miles away, still reeling from the day's shock. Her father had been arrested. And to make matters worse, her crucial notebook, filled with the latest definitions of the Enemy, was gone.

“Little sister,” a hoarse voice rumbled beside her, thick with the smell of tobacco. A soldier, haggard and thin, barely older than herself, materialized from the gathering gloom. “Where is the nearest dorm?”

Svetlana, despite her turmoil, pointed towards the granite towers in the city center. “Over there.” He fell into step beside her, his presence a strange comfort in the unnerving stillness that had descended upon the city, broken only by the soft rustle of his newspaper-wrapped feet in the fresh snow.
