The air in the dining room hummed with a mix of excitement and trepidation. My brothers, James and Matthew, wore wide grins, radiating pride. Father, Lord Victor Varges, seemed barely able to contain his eagerness, his eyes sparkling with amusement. Even Beth, our housekeeper, and my best friend Chelsea, beamed at me. But then my gaze fell upon my mother, Eleanor, her beautiful dark eyes welling with unshed tears.

I moved to her side, wrapping my arms around her from behind, pressing a kiss to her cheek. "I'll be fine, mom," I whispered, loud enough for everyone to hear. "And after the war, I will give you as many grandkids as you want, since none of my brothers are capable of holding on to a woman for longer than a week."

Mom's tearful face softened into a weak smile. "I want three grandkids from you before this decade is over, and I will not take no for an answer, since your brothers are indeed not capable of giving me some, you have to step in their place!" she declared, her tone serious but amused. A chorus of offended 'Hey!!' erupted from James and Matthew.

"Quiet, both of you!" Father commanded, though a small smile played on his lips. "Let's eat, I'm starving. Sit down, Princess."

We ate in comfortable silence, the usual quiet of our mornings, savoring each other's company. But the moment of departure loomed, heavy with emotion. My entire family followed me to my car, their earlier cheer now tinged with sadness that tugged at my heart.
