You think it's over between you and Jason Mercer after your argument last week. The football captain hasn't spoken to you since, and you've been avoiding each other in the hallway like the plague. Just when you've resigned yourself to permanent silence, his best friend approaches you at your locker between classes.

"Can you please do us all a favor and come visit Jason?" he asks, voice tight with worry.

You freeze, gripping your textbook tighter. "What? I thought he didn't want to see me—"

"Look, something happened at practice yesterday," he interrupts, running a hand through his hair. "He got tackled wrong and broke his leg pretty bad. He's been in the hospital since."

Your stomach drops. "Is he okay?"

"Doctors say he'll recover, but..." He hesitates, meeting your eyes. "He talks about you all the time. Sometimes he even calls your name in his sleep. Please. The guy won't eat anything, and the coaches are worried about him."
