Leland Harris || Catharsis
MLM!POV - You are Leland's secret boyfriend. The Maplewood Grizzlies suffered another loss, from Leland's point of view, it was all his own fault. Maybe he could have made better calls, maybe he could have studied the other team harder, trained longer, ran plays until he could do them asleep... He wants to blame himself instead of acknowledging the stress that his father puts on him. After the game, Ethan pulls Leland aside for another one of his 'chats'... And you hear it all, despite Leland trying to protect you from the reality that his father is not very nice.It had been a loss. Because of course it was. Leland had spent weeks watching the other team, going over each enemy player's habits like he was some sort of psychology major. He'd watched so many games it had affected his sleep. To say he was grateful to his boyfriend for turning off his brain for a night before the big game was an understatement. Leland was trying to be a better partner for them, to show them that they mattered to him, but Ethan always made that impossible. Leland wanted to be himself in public, but at his core, he didn't know where he began and the Golden Boy mask ended, like a pain he didn't know what he would be without. The reason Leland had been so stressed out about this game? His dad was going to be there. Apparently with some woman named Rose. Not that it meant anything to Leland, and his dad made no mention of it mattering, but the words were clear: "Have to show off how good my son is." Everything came to a spiral- and he tried not to let it affect him, how he could feel the eyes of his dad on him like a hawk. Made Leland hypervigilant on the ice, every gesture that was made, he could feel himself doubt, and even though they had played hard, like they always do, the neck in neck fight on the ice... Still resulted in a loss, Leland's shoulder was bruised from being rammed into the boards, and he could feel his ribs ache. The exhaustion and stress of a week of this game compiling all at once when he saw his dad's posture. Standing straight, smiling and laughing with the woman who looked too familiar for Leland's liking, but he shook it off, dread filling his stomach when Ethan met Leland's gaze. "Give me a minute to talk to the star of the show." He smiled. Leland gave an awkward chuckle and gave a polite wave to the woman he assumed was 'Rose' and then looked at Ethan, "Pop, you know it's not just me on the ice... Without LJ's speed I never would have gotten a goal, and Brutus made sure that-""Take some damn credit, son." Ethan said with a smile, hooking his arm over Leland's shoulder, "You did damn good out there." Leland's heart pounded in his chest, the fists in his hoodie pockets clenching so tightly, he was sure he was causing his palm to bleed. This was all he ever wanted to hear from Ethan, this pride is all he wanted. But after so long, Leland knew it was fake, and it wasn't too long before the door to the office closed, and the verbal lashing began. "What the fuck were you thinking?" Ethan asked, nearly pushing Leland into a chair, "When I made you Team Captain, I expected excellence. I expected my son to not make a fuckin' fool outta me- and with your mother there-" Mother? "What?" Leland asks, his eyes wide, "Pop, what-""Shut the fuck up, Leland." Ethan growls, "I'm talking." And yet, that woman's face is all Leland could picture. That woman- Rose- was Leland's mother? The woman who abandoned Leland with Ethan? Leland's hands were shaking, and he was doing everything he could to stay in place, remembering to breathe. "Captains get results, Leland. I told you the last time you got a loss like this, I'd take you away from your fuckin' friends and train you myself-" Not seeing his boyfriend for that long would break Leland. The only person who didn't expect him to be anything more than who he was. Leland felt his throat close up at the thought of arguing against his father, but he had to. "You can't!" Leland exclaimed, desperation too clear in his voice. Too small... Like a scared kid. "Excuse me, boy?" Leland stood up, unable to help the flight-or-fight responses coming through right now. He's faced dudes that were Brutus' height and strength, he's decked brick walls of men with a clear conscience, had zero qualms about body checking on the ice. Fear on the ice did not register... But his Pop? Ethan? Terrified the shit out of him. "No- just... The team- they- we need to train as a team, Pop. That's all I meant-""Leland Alexander Harris. Do. What I fucking tell you to do." Leland swallowed thickly, unable to look away from his father's cold icy gaze. "Yes, Pop..." Leland nodded, his voice quivering slightly, "I should probably tell the guys-""You won't say a single word." Ethan all but commanded, "You're gonna leave it to me, because I can't have you looking like a bitch with a tail between your legs." There was a yank of a door opening, a door nearly being thrown off its hinges. Leland's panicked gaze instantly met with his boyfriend's face, his mouth open as if to say words, and yet- nothing would come. Leland knew by the look in his eyes, his boyfriend had heard everything. "Good." Ethan smiled, as if nothing was wrong, "I know you and Leland are close, so maybe I should be the first to tell you. Leland and I are going on a Father-Son vacation." Leland knew his boyfriend wouldn't fall for it. Leland had tried to shield him from Ethan for as long as they've been a secret pair. "Hey..." Leland says, taking a breath, trying to get between his boyfriend and his dad, but it's clear that his boyfriend is not having it.
