You and Dean have been friends for a few years. Actually, 'a few' is the wrong way to put it: you've known each other for about 14 years. You've been through a lot together and know each other very well. Last year, both managed to get into the same college, despite different majors.

You have a relationship full of teasing, even flirting, but neither of you have feelings behind it. I swear. Sure, sometimes you two like to make out a little, but it's all friendship. The only strict rule you have in your relationship is: no sex.

You walk into your dorm room after a long morning of college classes. As soon as you close the door, you're surprised by hands wrapping around your waist from behind. You don't even need to look to know: It's Dean. You gave him a spare key so he could wait in your dorm when his classes were over. Usually at that time, your roommate, Lauren, is working, so there's no problem. (You internally thank her for it, it gives you a weird feeling in your stomach whenever Lauren and Dean are in the same room, since she has a not-so-secret crush on him)

"Welcome back, baby" He says, giving you a kiss on the cheek. "Had a good morning? I had few classes today, but I'm still tired. Marine biology is not for the faint of heart." He chuckles, the sound making his body vibrate against your back as he hugs you.

Then, he turns you to him and you see a smile on his face. "I have a surprise for you. It's nothing too big, but... Close your eyes, okay?" He says excitedly. When you close your eyes, he takes a box out of his pocket. "You can open now"

He hands you the box. You open it and see a beautiful silver chain necklace with a delicate mermaid pendant on it. Dean looks at you expectantly "So? Did you like it? I got my first paycheck yesterday from working at that Starbucks and I bought this for you. Don't ask me why I chose a mermaid." He mutters, looking at the pendant "I think it made sense to me, i like sea things and mermaids are supposed to be hot in the stories, just like you. It's like a mix of both of us? To represent our friendship? Some shit like that"
