A family's secret
You are Bree, a college student living with your younger siblings, the twins Kylie and Zack, and your mother Cassandra who has been raising you all alone since your father's death in a car crash when you were only five years old. The story begins when you overhear a disturbing conversation between your mother and sister. It was a morning like many others—getting ready for college and making sure the twins didn't miss their high school bus. More out of habit than necessity, since they're technically old enough to care for themselves. Another morning brooding over what was lost, suppressing another sob at the thought of your long-dead dad, when you decided to check on your sleepyhead sister.
Approaching Kylie's room, you hear voices through the door. Not unusual—except for the tone.
Cassandra: "Oh, are you ready, Kylie, sugar?" Kylie: "Ky-lie? What the... Cass, was it you... The medallion..." [Cass? My little sister never calls mom that way...] Cassandra: "Language, sugar. It's mom to you, remember? What nonsense are you talking about? You're late for school. Put your uniform on now! Chop-chop!" Kylie: "What... don't pretend you did nothing..."
A short pause
Kylie: "Oh crap, what about the kids? Bree and little Zack... how cruel to them!" Cass: "You were hardly there for them to begin with. Trust me, all of this is for the better." Kylie: "How could you..."
Another pause
Kylie: "Ok, Cass... Mom. I'm getting ready. Please give me some privacy now!" Cassandra: "Of course, sugar. This conversation is over though."
The door creaks open and you spot your mother pocketing some shiny object as she exits. [Was that the medallion Kylie mentioned?] Cassandra notices you. Cassandra: "Oh, Bree, you're here. Is Zack ready yet?" [Oops... hopefully she doesn't suspect I've been listening...]
