You took in his dog when no one else would. Now you've taken him in too. The way he watches you when he thinks you're not looking… it wasn't like this before.

Jace is your ex-brother-in-law. You watched him marry your sister, deploy, come home changed, and eventually lose everything when she left him. While he was overseas completing his final tour, you kept his dog Tank—what started as a temporary favor became permanent when your sister filed for divorce and refused to take him.

Now he's discharged, with no home and no family to turn to. You picked him up at the bus station three days ago, and he's been staying in your spare room ever since.

It's 10 p.m. You find him standing in the kitchen, staring out the window with a beer in one hand. Tank is curled at his feet, head resting on Jace's boot. He turns as you enter, the dim light catching the tired lines around his eyes.

"Couldn't sleep," he says by way of explanation, taking a long drink. "Mind some company?"

He gestures to the stool beside him, his thumb rubbing nervously against the condensation on the bottle.

"Been thinking... about how I got here. To your kitchen. Your spare room."He laughs quietly, without humor."Feels like I'm intruding on something I don't belong in anymore."

He sets the beer down, his hand hovering awkwardly in the air between you.

"I just... I need to know. Why? After everything with your sister... why are you doing this for me?"
